It’s the end of the year, which means it’s time to look back and reflect on the bad, the good, and the very good of 2023. And that includes celebrity outfits. Because in a year that gave us some not-so-fab looks, we were also gifted with some surprisingly A+ ones. From Bad Bunny’s daring backless number at this year’s Met Gala to Jennifer Lawrence’s enviable off-duty style, the stars showed up and showed out in 2023. Here are some of the best celeb outfits of the year. We can’t wait for 2024.

Bad Bunny’s Jacquemus MET Gala Look

His now-deceased relationship with Kendall Jenner aside (R.I.P), 2023 was undoubtedly the year of Benito. And if anything, it was his look at this year’s Met Gala that cemented him as a fashion icon. The singer’s bespoke all-white tweed suit from Jacquemus was a showstopper, featuring a cutout back and well as a rosette cape with a 26-foot long train. Choosing to attend fashion’s biggest night wearing Jacquemus wasn’t a huge surprise for the singer, who starred in the brand’s Spring 2022 campaign, but the fit—accessorized with silver studs and slicked-back hair—was a far cry from the star’s previous looks. And that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Greta Lee in Loewe at the Academy of Music

Forget Barbie’s Dream House, I want Greta Lee’s dream closet—or at least access to her red carpet stylist. In a year that gave us tons of Greta, thanks to her stunning turn in Canadian director Celine Song’s film Past Lives, we’ve also been privy to her equally great style. As one of Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson’s muses, Lee has been the poster girl for the brand this year. This stunning off-the-shoulder gown from the brand that Lee wore to the recent Academy Museum Gala is exemplary of what Lee—and Anderson—do best: classic shapes that pack a punch.

Sienna Miller in Schiaparelli at Vogue World: London

We love a pregnancy reveal. But a pregnancy reveal that involves, or revolves around, a fashion decision? Even better. Actress Sienna Miller—who’s expecting her second child, a daughter—debuted her growing bump and pregnancy glow at September’s Vogue World London in a sculptural Schiaparelli dream. In classic Miller fashion, the An American Woman actress went simple with her makeup and jewellery, and let her dress—and growing belly—do the talking. Also, is she not giving “The Birth of Venus” chic?!

Cardi B in Thierry Mugler at the Grammys

If you gasped when Cardi B stepped out on the 2024 Grammys red carpet in a custom Thierry Mugler gown, you definitely were not alone, because this look is 100% a work of art. The rapper always shows up when she’s walking the carpet, but this look was something unique for Cardi and truly felt like her “A Star Is Born” red carpet moment. The sculptural design of the Mugler gown brought all the drama, which is all that we ask for, really.

Jennifer Lawrence’s impeccable street style

We’re so thrilled to see JLaw back on our screens after several years away, and we’re equally as thrilled to see her back on the red carpet. But where Lawrence really stood out this year was in her street style. While Sofia Richie Grange became the poster girl for Quiet Luxury in 2023, we’d make the argument that Lawrence, who is styled by Jamie Mizrahi, was right up there with her. Her off-duty street style, rife with oversized trousers, luxe knits and billowing coats, typically paired with Adidas Gazelles or an on-trend ballet flat, is effortlessly chic—and the look we forever want to emulate.

Pedro Pascal’s leggy Met Gala look

Another Met Gala hit for the boys. At this year’s event, actor Pedro Pascal proved that leg-baring moments on the red carpet aren’t just for the ladies. The The Last of Us actor rocked the colour of the year, donning a full Valentino shorts look that had us weak in the knees (pun intended).

Margot Robbie’s Barbie press tour looks

Leading lady Margot Robbie’s entire Barbie press tour wardrobe was a feast for the eyes, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t spotlight at least one of the star’s standout looks. Because they were very good. Fully leaning in to the nostalgia and whimsy of playing Barbie on the big screen, Robbie chose to bring some of the doll’s iconic looks to life. There were a lot of fab options to choose from, but we’ll have to go with Robbie’s Schiaparelli look inspired by 1960s “Solo in the Spotlight” Barbie, as seen at the film’s L.A. premiere.

Jodie Turner-Smith in Gucci at Vanity Fair Oscar Party

Remember when Nicole Kidman turned out lewks after her divorce from Tom Cruise? After splitting with husband Joshua Jackson late this year, we have a feeling 2024 will be the same for actress Jodie Turner-Smith. Don’t get us wrong: Turner-Smith is always an icon when she graces a red carpet, but we went gaga for her in Gucci at the March Vanity Fair Oscar Party. She’s no stranger to adventure when it comes to her style, and we love that she’s channeling Harlequin with this look. The structure! That pop of red velvet! It’s all perfection.

Hailey Bieber in Ermanno Scervino

Styled by Dani Michelle (who also styles Bieber’s BFF Kendall Jenner), Bieber has her outfit formula down pat: a minidress with strappy heels, a small bag (probably By Far or Jacquemus), a chunky necklace, and—of course—glazed lips thanks to the star’s Rhode lip treatments. While we’re a fan of many of the models’ outfits that fall under this formula, it’s her red strapless Ermanno Scervino mini, worn in August while promoting the launch of Rhode’s strawberry peptide lip treatment, that takes the cake. The look went viral because of the difference between Bieber’s glam look and her husband’s  Croc-forward ensemble, but we love its simplicity, as well as the fact that it’s easy for fans to translate into their own wardrobes—or Halloween costumes.

Kendall Jenner’s Met after party look

The Met is known for its beautiful gowns, but the after party looks are typically the best—and most adventurous—looks on fashion’s biggest night. While Kendall Jenner’s main gala look—a Marc Jacobs tuxedo-inspired bodysuit—left much to be desired, her equally revealing after-party look, which leaned into lingerie as outerwear, was a smash hit. Donning Nenji Dosaka, Jenner paid homage to ‘90s supermodels. Dosaka reinvented a look reportedly first seen on Chanel’s Spring/Summer 1994 runway. We love an homage, and this one delivered on all fronts. A special shout-out goes to Jenner’s winter aprés-ski looks and her incredible rotation of fur coats.

Anne Hathaway in Valentino at Paris Fashion Week

There’s a reason people continuously refer to actress Anne Hathaway as Mother. The Princess of Genovia serves certified looks every time she graces a red carpet; and her best of the year has to be her leopard Valentino Haute Couture outfit from Paris Fashion Week (with matching leopard-print tights!) This PWF look also gave us the perfect celeb moment: Hathaway dancing with abandon to “Lady Marmalade.”

Precious Lee in Fendi at The Met Gala

Margot Robbie may have had Barbiecore on lock in 2023, but model Precious Lee was definitely channeling a 1960s era Femme Fatale Barbie with her Met Gala look. The matching leather gloves and on-trend headband were the cherry on top of an already A+ outfit.
