At the 2024 Met Gala, the Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition theme and “The Garden of Time” dress code were in full bloom on the green carpet—best executed in the beauty department by stars who embraced excellent garden nymph glam, fantastical hair and botanical beauty looks.
While Met mavens Zendaya and Kim Kardashian leaned into the “sleeping beauties” theme with slept-in hair, Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo opted for enchanted makeup, and Sarah Jessica Parker and Kendall Jenner were in one accord with fairytale-like, ultra-long lengths.
Ahead, we break down the 12 best beauty looks from the 2024 Met Gala.
Zendaya
The first of two glam moments from Met Monday, Zendaya’s sleepy-eyed shadow, razor-thin brows and wilted-red rose lip painted by Raoul Alejandre gave peak garden goddess glam. With ‘I woke up like this’ hair styled by Ursula Stephen using Dyson’s Supersonic r Professional Hairdryer, she was a sleeping beauty indeed. Hang this work of art in the museum, stat.
Sarah Jessica Parker
As if just plucked from the pages of a fairytale, Sarah Jessica Parker’s signature blonde locks, styled by Serge Normant, were swept back into a voluminous high pony that trailed down her back at extreme lengths. Beneath her headpiece, makeup artist Elaine Offers used Charlotte Tilbury makeup and brushes to craft a timeless soft glam look, locked in for a long night ahead with the Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray.
Tyla
For Tyla’s Met Gala debut, the South African singer paired her “sands of time” inspired ensemble with beautiful bronze glam by Pat McGrath—but the finer beauty details were not to be overlooked. A brush of sand on her shoulder added to her theme, while her wet hair styled by Lacy Redway and dripping 3D nails designed by manicurist Coca Michelle were a nod to her hit single, “Water.”
Ariana Grande
There’s method dressing, and then there’s method makeup. Paying homage to her role as Glinda the Good Witch in her upcoming film Wicked, Ariana Grande’s soft-hued Met glam by Michael Anthony using Grande’s own r.e.m beauty range was giving total garden fairy—with custom petal wing appliqués placed just above her cheekbones for an ethereal touch.
Chloë Sevigny
Going the historical route per the “reawakening fashion” concept, Chloë Sevigny’s braided hairdo, executed by Mustafa Yanaz, was an intricate feast for the eyes. “We’re incorporating a lot of hair and an homage to the Victorians, and in the Victorian era, how they celebrated their loved ones who passed away by making ornaments and jewelry out of their dead or loved one’s hair,” she told Vogue.
FKA Twigs
Serving water nymph glam while covered head-to-toe in diamond droplets, FKA Twigs looked as though she’d just been splashing about in the Met Museum’s proverbial “Garden of Time.” Twigs’ hairstylist Louis Souvestre elevated the look with a gravity-defying, braided updo.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner’s remarkably long lengths had an air of regality that we’re still dreaming about the morning after the big night. In contrast to her archival Givenchy gown, the L’Oréal Paris global ambassador kept her glam glowy yet subdued with a petal pink pout, courtesy of MUA extraordinaire Mary Phillips.
Cynthia Erivo
There’s something about statement pink blush that screams “flower power,” as though the pigment is blooming from your cheeks. Case in point: Cynthia Erivo’s makeup look. After prepping the skin with the Lyma x Joanna Czech Pre-Red Carpet facial treatment, the Wicked actress complimented her spidery lash look with metallic fuchsia blush placed high on the cheekbones and up onto the temples.
Taylor Russell
Canadian actress Taylor Russell made a lasting impression at her first-ever Met Gala, with blunt-cut baby bangs and an elaborate updo styled by Joey George adorned with custom floral Loewe hair accessories. On the mood board for this hairstyle? Audrey Hepburn from War and Peace! As seen on George’s Instagram story.
Kim Kardashian
From the front, it appeared Kim Kardashian’s whimsical cascade of platinum waves brought to life by Chris Appleton using Color Wow products and Shark Beauty tools stopped there. But, as the reality TV star turned for the cameras, a deliberately messy, slept-in fishtail braid was revealed.
Janelle Monáe
“Upon glimpsing the dress during the fitting, I immediately envisioned embracing an ethereal, classical, glam aesthetic. Radiant, luxury skin accentuated by a sort of glassy, mesmerizing eye look, very flashy and complemented by a nude lip,” says MUA Keita Moore, who painted Janelle Monáe’s other-worldly makeup using Guerlain products like the Terracotta Le Teint Foundation. As for hair, stylist Nikki Nelms prepped for this “soft sculpted crop” using Olaplex’s Bond Maintenance shampoo and conditioner duo.
Doja Cat
Pat McGrath, the artist that you are! The iconic makeup mogul used products like the Mothership V: Bronze Seduction eyeshadow palette and FetishEYES Mascara from her eponymous cosmetics brand to create this “chrome tears” look on Doja Cat. Sleeping beauty, who? Try weeping beauty.
