Fans of Sandy Liang rejoice. The New York designer has combined her signature quirky prints and grown-up takes on youthful staples (don’t forget, she single handedly made fleece cool again) with Van’s skater-chic DNA for a limited-edition collection, which launches today. The Queens neighbourhood that she grew up in, her grandma and hand-me-downs from her childhood inspired this collaboration, which includes a mix of footwear, apparel and accessories.

“To see my ideas come to life on such an iconic collection of footwear and apparel is a dream come true” said Liang in a press release. “This collection embodies the playful dreaminess of the nineties, as well as the grittiness of downtown New York City.”

Liang put her spin on five of Vans Classic sneaker styles, from cheetah-printed fuzzy slip-ons and pink velour Old Skools (similar to the couch in her Lower East Side studio) with a built-in ankle bracelet and sparkly metal charms, to a dual leopard and traditional tartan plaid print on the Vans Sport. Tie-dye, butterfly motifs and bejeweled details in pieces like crop tops and bike shorts offer the ultimate ’90s look for the perennially nostalgic.

When the ELLE Canada team got news of this collaboration, an excited clamour instantly took over the office. Question: How many bucket hats is enough? Answer: The limit does not exist.

I’ve got my eyes on the animal print and check sneakers. Sandy Liang is the queen of cool prints so I’d style around them to highlight the great pattern combo. I’d pick slim, cropped trousers or a calf-length skirt and pair it with the crisp white Sandy Liang sock and a plain white or graphic tee.

I’m obsessed with this halter crop top because it reminds me exactly of what I used to wear in my childhood. The soft pink embroidery with butterfly detailing is super feminine and gives me extreme nostalgia. I would wear this throughout the summer with high-waisted boyfriend jeans or with the matching track pants in this collection. Styled with white sneakers and a messy bun, it’s the ideal balance of fun and comfy.

I’m a huge fan of Sandy Liang’s nostalgia-tinged designs and would love nothing more than to wear this collaboration from head to toe. With its subtle snakeskin print and on-trend polka-dot pattern, I’m drawn to the bucket hat and matching jacket, and could see myself wearing both together for a boldly whimsical look come spring. Shockingly, I don’t own a pair of Vans yet and I’ll be looking to add the black Old Skools with the stitched homage to the Lower East Side to my shoe collection.

The pink jumpsuit immediately strikes me as trendy yet timeless. We’ve been seeing utilitarian styles everywhere over the past year, but the studs and bright pop of colour remind me of something Dolly Parton might wear onstage in the ’80s. I’d pair it with some sneakers for a casual look – the classic black Vans with Sandy Liang laces and butterfly detailing would be an adorable option.
