Celebs and COVID-19 Update: Riri Donates $5 Million, Selena Gomez Does the Safe Hands Challenge
Here's what celebrities have been doing in self-isolation for the past few days.
by : Hannah Ziegler- Mar 23rd, 2020
We are now over a week into self-isolation, though it’s safe to say it feels like it’s been much longer than that. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, entertaining, and at times, heartwarming content from celebrities can provide a harmless distraction (other times, not so much). Here’s what celebrities have been doing from quarantine the past few days.
Rihanna Donates $5 Million to Various Charities
Rihanna, as we know, wears many hats as a musician, entrepreneur and actor – though one of those hats is actually more of a halo. As a philanthropist, she runs the Clara Lionel Foundation, which has just donated $5 million to COVID-19-related relief foundations. This includes Direct Relief, Feeding America, Partners in Health WHO’s Solidarity Response Fund and the International Rescue Committee.
The Clara Lionel Foundation website states: “We know that one of the most powerful weapons we have against COVID-19 is preparedness. Protecting our frontline health workers and marginalized communities around the world requires getting ahead of it FAST. The time to act is now.”
According to the website, the funding will go towards testing and care in Haiti and Malawi, with additional support in native communities, as well as supplementing food banks and healthcare facilities with more equipment.

Selena Gomez’s Safe Hands Challenge
Selena Gomez is the latest star to partake in the #SafeHands Challenge – a hand-washing tutorial started by the World Health Organization (WHO) in which people post videos of themselves washing their hands properly.
Gomez’s tactic is to rub soap between the fingers, massage the tips of fingers into her palms and use a paper towel to turn off the tap to avoid direct hand contact. Pretty good technique.
Gomez was nominated by the Huffington Post co-founder and Thrive Global CEO Arianna Huffington and challenged Gigi Hadid, Cardi B and Olivia Wilde herself. While Wilde has already accepted the challenge, we are eagerly awaiting Hadid and Cardi B’s hand washing vids.
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Livestream a Concert
The couple that quarantines together, sings together. Singing videos in the time of COVID-19 can be polarizing (if you know, you know), but in Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s case, it works.
The duo live-streamed from a vaguely tropical-looking location on Friday, performing acoustic versions of “Lost in Japan” and “Senorita” by Mendes, “Havana” by Cabello and a cover of “Kiss Me” by Ed Sheeran. The performance was sponsored by Global Citizen and WHO and included a Q&A. If you missed the stream, you can watch the whole thing below via Global Citizen’s YouTube channel.
Stevie Nicks Has Been Listening to Harry Style’s Fine Line While Self-Isolating
The original Gold Dust Woman, Stevie Nicks, has emerged from self-isolation with a note to fans, revealing that she has been staying in with her goddaughters, assistant and dogs. “…trying to think of creative things to do. I am getting all my paintings and drawings out,” she wrote. Most significantly, her quarantine soundtrack has been none other than Harry Styles’ Fine Line, which she said inspires her right now. “Way to go H – it is your Rumours.” A high compliment indeed. Revisit Harry and Stevie’s concert footage together on YouTube, here.
