Celebrities and COVID-19: Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds Donate $1 Million, Idris Elba Tests Positive and More
by : Hannah Ziegler- Mar 17th, 2020
Celebrities are, for the most part, dealing with COVID-19 like the rest of us: by staying at home and practicing social distancing. Some, like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, are using their platforms to encourage fans to follow advice from public health officials, while others, like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, are donating money to relief funds. Then there’s Jared Leto, who was at a silent retreat and had “no idea” what was going on in the world for the past two weeks. Here is a roundup of how celebrities are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jared Leto Just Realized The Extent of the Coronavirus Pandemic
Jared Leto completed a silent retreat on March 16, and said he had “no idea what was happening outside the facility.”
“Wow. 12 days ago I began a silent meditation in the desert,” wrote Leto in an Instagram post. “We were totally isolated. No phone, no communication etc. We had no idea what was happening outside the facility. Walked out yesterday into a very different world. One that’s been changed forever. Mind blowing – to say the least.”
Taylor Swift Has A Message For Fans
In addition to her plea on Instagram Stories for her fans to practice social distancing, Swift has also recommended people try to act more like her cat Meredith. “For Meredith, self quarantining is a way of life,” wrote Swift. “Be like Meredith.”

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds Donate $1 Million To Food Banks
Lively announced on her Instagram page that she, along with her husband, Reynolds, would be donating a total of $1 million to Food Banks Canada and Feeding America in an effort to support low-income families and individuals.
“If you can give, these orgs need help,” she wrote. “Remember that love can travel through all of this. Communities are stepping up – shopping for the elderly, making lunches for children. We can all do something for one another, even if that’s simply staying home.”

Busy Phillips And Mandy Moore Joined Cameo So You’ll Stay Home
In case you needed any more incentive to stay inside, Busy Philipps and Mandy Moore are both making personalized videos on Cameo for a $100 fee, which will be donated to food banks.
“Guys. I joined @cameo so I can tell your friends and family to stay the fuck home and ALL THE MONEY made is going to @nokidhungry and @wckitchen,” Philipps captioned her announcement on Instagram.
Moore’s recently announced tour has been put on hold, so she is also spending her free time making videos for fans. “Trying to stay productive and creative and feel helpful during what seems like a helpless moment for us all,” she explained on Instagram. “Excited to make some videos for all of you AND help an organization on the ground doing some truly vital work during this time.”

Idris Elba Has COVID-19
Idris Elba posted a video to his Twitter page revealing that he has contracted COVID-19 but is asymptomatic. “I didn’t have any symptoms – I got tested because I realized I was exposed to someone who had also tested positive,” he said.
Elba explained that he had immediately self-quarantined and got a test kit, with the results coming back yesterday. He also expressed how vital social distancing is for people who may be asymptomatic too.
“There are people out there who aren’t showing symptoms and that can easily spread it. So now’s a real time to be really vigilant about washing your hands and keeping your distance.”
This morning I tested positive for Covid 19. I feel ok, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus. Stay home people and be pragmatic. I will keep you updated on how I’m doing 👊🏾👊🏾 No panic. pic.twitter.com/Lg7HVMZglZ

Tom Hanks And Rita Wilson Are Doing OK
It’s been almost a week since Tom Hanks announced that he and his wife, Rita, both tested positive for COVID-19. In typical Hanks fashion, he is posting optimistic and uplifting updates from isolation in Australia, where he was shooting a movie.
His most recent update reads: “We are taking it one-day-at-a-time. There are things we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourselves and each other, no? Remember, despite all the current events, there is no crying in baseball. Hanx.”
