Model and entrepreneur Hailey Bieber is one of society’s prominent It girls, so it’s no surprise that when she does something, we all take notice. Case in point: Her viral “glazed-doughnut nails” last year and her more recent bob haircut had everyone heading to their local nail and hair salons.

Then, in June 2022, Bieber put her name to something that isn’t just a trend. The self-proclaimed “skincare-product junkie” launched Rhode, a line of simple and well-thought-out products with a focus on imparting a natural looking dewy glow and improving skin’s moisture barrier. The first round sold out instantly when it hit the U.S. market, and buzz for the brand landed 26-year-old Bieber on Forbes’ 2022 30 Under 30 list, cementing her status as an entrepreneur. With the hype still on the rise, Canadians can finally add Rhode to their carts. We recently spoke with Bieber about expanding her market, her love of skincare and her favourite items from the line.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE RHODE IN CANADA?

“I’m just really excited—I’ve seen so many people asking for it here. If I could have made it happen sooner, I would have, but we really wanted to take our time and make sure that everything was in place, so I’m very happy that that day is here.”

WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR THE BRAND COME FROM?

“I’d always wanted to do something in the world of beauty, and it felt authentic to start with skincare. All my makeup looks—even when I’m doing my own makeup—are very skincare-focused because I’m so hands-on when it comes to taking care of my skin. It’s something I really love and am passionate about.”

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE KEY PILLARS YOU HAD IN MIND WHEN BUILDING THE BRAND?

“I wanted the formulas to be very specific and very effective and contain ingredients that I know to be good and that have really worked for my skin. The aesthetic of the brand was [also] important to me—I wanted it to be chic, simple and to the point.”

WHAT IS YOUR MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE?

“I usually just rinse my face in the morning because I find that it helps my skin retain moisture. The only time I’ll wash it is if I put on tretinoin the night before, because if there’s any excess left, I don’t want to leave it on during the day. I usually do a hydrating toner or essence, like the Peptide Glazing Fluid; then I apply the Barrier Restore Cream and an SPF. I never skip SPF—it’s my one rule for daytime.”

WHAT IS YOUR NIGHTTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE?

“It’s similar except I get more into the treatment side of things. I really like skin cycling, which [TikTok dermatologist Whitney Bowe] introduced everyone to. I try to exfoliate at least twice a week, whether it’s with a liquid exfoliator or an exfoliating mask. I use the Peptide Glazing Fluid and the Barrier Restore Cream; then I layer a heavier, thicker cream overtop. I like to feel a full glazing seal over my skin at nighttime so that when I wake up in the morning, [my skin is] really juicy and fresh.”

WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING SURROUNDED BY AMAZING WOMEN WHO ARE ALSO ENTREPRENEURS?

“I think the beauty community is such a special space—I’ve found [that the people are] not competitive and really just want to support one another and lift one another up. On top of that, I have friends who have started their own businesses, and it’s nice to be able to go to people you have a deep friendship with and have them relate to you. It really makes the journey sweeter.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU’RE IN CANADA?

“When Justin and I are there, we like to just hang out. We wake up and go get coffees and hash browns at Tims. We have a place near Justin’s family, and we like to chill and be in nature. And sometimes it’s fun to go into the city and catch a Leafs game—just your regular old Canadian things.”
