For those who aren’t up to speed on the comings and goings of Selena Gomez, allow us to fill you in. Aside from running her beauty brand, Gomez has kept herself busy filming her HBO cooking series, Selena + Chef, and now, drastically changing her hair colour.
Bidding adieu to her signature glossy brown locks, Gomez is now the proud owner of a platinum blonde ‘do.
Posting the new look to Rare Beauty’s Instagram—and simultaneously shocking fans worldwide—she shared a photo of her new lighter look featuring some soft face-framing bangs, dark roots, and a chic pastel-manicure. But as it turns out, the transformation of her tresses wasn’t as speedy as you’d think.
According to the professional behind her new look, going from a deep brunette to a sparkling blonde took the “Same Old Love” singer eight hours in her stylists chair. As for which colour connoisseurs were responsible for Gomez‘s new locks, fans can thank colourists Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri at Nine Zero One who opened up about the process of taking the natural brunette to the colour she is now.
“We’ve been doing Selena’s colour for over a decade now. She typically keeps it pretty natural, but this time she went for a big change,” Capri said in a statement. “This blonde is unique to her as we had to make sure there was an equal balance of cool and warm for her skin tone. It’s an edgier look and perfect for summer.”
As per her colourists, the entire process took “200 foils, several bowls of bleach, and eight hours of hair magic.”
Those of us who have spent countless hours with their neck draped over their hair stylist’s basin will know that lifting and bleaching can be quite harsh on your hair. And when it came to Gomez’s tresses, it was no exception. To keep her locks feeling and looking healthy, Capri and Lee explain how they used Joico products—specifically the Colour Balance Purple Shampoo, Colour Balance Purple Conditioner, and Defy Damage Sleepover Overnight Nourishing Treatment.
Those who maintain a blonde mane would know how integral purple shampoo and conditioner can be, and its role in cleansing and softening the hair sans the dreaded brassiness. As for the Defy Damage overnight treatment, the products works to nourish and protect hair from damage while you sleep.
For a final touch of hydration, Lee recommends In Common Magic Myst Universal Elixir to hydrate, protect, and strengthen hair. And honestly, if that’s all we need for sun kissed locks, particularly in the depths of a Southern Hemisphere winter, then sign us up.
