Nothing feels as good as a really great workout—except having a really great hair day after that workout. But that’s not always easy. Although perspiration is just basically salt, water and proteins, too much of it “can be dehydrating to your scalp and the hair strands,” says hairstylist Domenic Gialleonardo from Toronto’s Loft Urban Salon.

PRO TIP: Letting your hair stay wet with sweat can be damaging. If you don’t have time to wash and style your hair, blow-dry it on a cool setting, aiming only at the roots. Run some dry shampoo and styling cream through your hair to revive. If you kill it at spin class and need a wash, shampoo only the roots to wash out the salt. Follow up with conditioner, combing through your hair with a wide-tooth comb, to prevent flyaways and frizz. Rinse with cool water to protect colour, and then gently squeeze out the water instead of towel drying, which can cause breakage. Follow with a heat protective styling cream.

TRY IT! The Ideal Hairstyle for Your Workout

High-intensity interval training: All those burpees and squat jumps get the heart pumping, sure, but they also get the sweat pouring. Gialleonardo recommends a high pony to keep hair in place—brush all of your hair up to the crown of your head and tie it with a spiral elastic. Spray down baby hairs.

Yoga: Keep your hair out of your face during your downward dog with a simple twisted bun, which is gentler on the hair than a messy topknot, says Gialleonardo. Brush all your hair up toward the back of your head and secure it with an elastic. Twist the pony and then wrap it around the elastic, using bobby pins to secure.

Running: Try a low pony or a cotton headband—or both. Cotton will help absorb the sweat around the hairline. If you’re running outside, be sure to use product with UV spray to protect strands from the sun.

Barre class: A ballet bun is so predictable. Switch it up with chic braids. Use the back end of a comb to create a middle part, and then secure each side of the hair with elastics and braid both ponytails. Smooth away flyaways with a lightweight gel or cream.
