A new year means an onslaught of (hopefully great) movies and TV shows to add to our must-watch lists. Here, we’re taking a look at 11 new Netflix releases we can’t wait to check out in 2024.

The Brothers Sun

Even before she won an Oscar, any Michelle Yeoh project should have been considered essential viewing. The Brothers Sun—which was co-created by Brad Falchuk (a frequent Ryan Murphy collaborator) and relative industry newcomer Byron Wu—is no different. The crime dramedy follows Yeoh’s Eileen Sun, the matriarch of a powerful Tawianese triad family who moved to the U.S. with her youngest son, Bruce (Sam Song Li), seeking safety. But when her husband/triad head is violently attacked, her eldest son, Charles (Justin Chien), travels to California to protect his family, revealing long-held secrets about the Suns to Bruce while bringing the fight—for power, respect and love—closer to home. Good Grief

Canadian Dan Levy is back, but don’t expect his feature-length debut to make you laugh out loud as much as Schitt’s Creek did. Written and directed by Levy, Good Grief takes place after Marc’s (Levy) vibrant husband Oliver (Luke Evans) suddenly dies. Marc’s two closest friends (Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel) are immediately there for him and unwavering in their support as he navigates the loss. So, after some time passes, Marc decides to take his pals on a soul-searching escape to Paris, where they’ll each have to confront the things they’ve been avoiding. January 5

Lift

There are few things more enjoyable than a slick, well-done heist movie. Now, Lift gets its chance at earning a spot in the genre’s canon. The comedy follows an eccentric crew tasked with stealing $500 million in gold. The catch? They have to do it during a flight on a passenger plane, 40,000 feet in the air. Kevin Hart, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Viveik Kalra, Yun Jee Kim and Sam Worthington star. January 12

Griselda

Get ready to meet a whole new side of Sofía Vergara. The Modern Family star takes on the titular role of the Narcos-esque crime drama Griselda (which is from the same team behind the aforementioned series). The six-part show tells the story of Griselda Blanco, a Colombian woman who built one of the most profitable cartels ever during the ’70s and ’80s, earning her the nickname “The Godmother.” Expect retro fashion and a lot of violence. Avatar: The Last Airbender

The anime-inspired Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most popular American animated series in recent memory, so, of course, the powers that be in Hollywood have been trying to pull off a live-action version for quite some time. There’s already been one ill-fated attempt, M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 fantasy-adventure flick The Last Airbender, but this new version hopes to find more success amongst long-time fans by being more faithful to the source material. For the uninitiated: The series is set in a world where humans live among four divided nations driven by the elements of water, earth, fire and air. In steps Aang (Gordon Cormier), who discovers he can learn to master all four of the elements and hopefully unite the nations. February 22

3 Body Problem

Whether you loved the ending or hated it, you’re probably wondering what the creators of Game of Thrones have been up to since the HBO series wrapped. The answer? 3 Body Problem, a mysterious new series adapted from Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy Remembrance of the Earth’s Past. The sweeping series starts in 1960s China when a young woman makes a decision that is felt around the world and across timelines, which all unfold as a group of scientists unite to stop humanity’s greatest threat. Benedict Wong, Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Eiza González, Rosalind Chao and Jonathan Pryce are among the cast. March 21

The Gentlemen

No worries if you don’t remember Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen—the action-comedy film came out just before the COVID-19 pandemic started, so we all had other things on our minds. The good news is you don’t need to be overly familiar with the flick to watch Ritchie’s show of the same name, which is set in the same world but introduces a whole new cast of characters. The series follows Eddie (Theo James), who upon inheriting his father’s estate, discovers its part of a weed empire and gets pulled into Britain’s criminal underworld. Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson and Giancarlo Esposito also star. TBA

A Family Affair

Imagine your mother is Nicole Kidman and your boss is Zac Efron. Now, imagine walking into a room only to catch them hooking up. That’s exactly the kind of awkwardness that Joey King’s character in A Family Affair experiences, leading the trio down a tricky path that intertwines romance, identity and more. TBA

Bridgerton (Season 3)

We haven’t actually been waiting a lifetime for the third season of Bridgerton, but it kind of feels that way, no? At the very least, we know they’ve been filming, so new episodes have to come our way eventually. And book fans know that this season is set to centre arguably the best relationship of the novels: the budding romance between the third eldest Bridgerton son, Colin (Luke Newton), and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan)—a.k.a. Lady Whistledown herself. TBA

Damsel

Fairy tales taught us that marrying Prince Charming inevitably leads to your happily ever after. But it’s nearly 2024, and we know the truth is much more complicated than that. The creative team behind Damsel takes that idea to the extreme. The movie stars Millie Bobby Brown as a young woman who agrees to marry a prince, but then discovers the marriage is actually a trap and that the royal family plans to sacrifice her to honour an old debt. She’s unceremoniously dumped into a cave occupied by a dragon, and must fight on her own to survive. Angela Bassett, Robin Wright and Nick Robinson also star. TBA

Shirley

Regina King speaks, we listen. In 2024, she’s set to command the screen in Shirley, a biopic about the trailblazing politician Shirley Chisholm. The film will track Shirley’s path to becoming the first Black Congresswoman, as well as the first Black woman to run for president in the U.S., while examining the personal cost that comes with being a bold boundary breaker.
