Summer is right around the corner, which means a colour refresh is in order. If you’re in need of some inspiration before your next salon visit or home colouring sesh, we’ve got you covered. Read on for 7 of our favourite 2024 summer hair colour trends, from spiced rum to liquid gold blonde and beyond.
Sandy Blonde
There’s no denying that brunettes have had a serious moment in the spotlight for several seasons now, but this summer blonde is making its grand re-entrance. Ease back into blonde with a low-key sandy hue, à la Sydney Sweeney and Taylor Swift. “This is the perfect beige and wheat tone that feels more on the natural side,” says celebrity stylist & Olaplex Ambassador Cindy Duplantis. “To keep this tone, it’s important to use blonde-enhancing products to ensure you don’t go brassy or muddy,” she says. Olaplex No.4 and 5 Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo and Conditioner are her picks to keep your blonde in great shape all summer long.
Spiced Rum
Reds in all its forms is still trending big-time this summer, but we’re swapping last year’s Copper Cowboy for something with a little more depth: spiced rum. “This colour falls between a strawberry blonde and auburn,” says Duplantis. “It’s is a perfect golden copper, which is easy to achieve in a lot of hair types because it takes minimal lifting,” she says. It’s a great way to add warmth to your natural hair, or to enhance your current blonde or brunette (or even red!) without a major colour commitment.
Soft Espresso
Bella Baxters’s glorious puffed sleeve dresses in Poor Things weren’t the only part of her look that caught our attention; her inky espresso hair colour still has us rethinking dark hair for summer. “It’s an almost smoky, not-quite-black [shade] that delivers a welcome dose of drama,” says Mona Klein, VP of innovation & product development at Clairol. The key to giving this soft black colour a ton of dimension? “It’s all about the lustre,” says Duplantis. Run a lightweight hair oil through your ends for an enviable glass-like finish.
Dusky Violet
Punky shades of plum are making a comeback, but this time with a grown-up twist. Instead of an all-over purple colour, blend shades like grape, aubergine and mauve with a dark base to enhance brunette tones that naturally lean violet. “It can have a soft hazy presence, almost dusky,” says Klein.
Cherry Cola
No surprises here: cherry cola hair is still going strong this summer. Interested but can’t commit? There’s plenty of ways to incorporate this crimson shade into your current colour. “The range of options from black cherry to bright copper and strawberry mean that anyone can take a jaunt into the red zone,” says Klein. Lean into auburn and ginger shades for a more subtle take on the trend. “It looks fantastic as either a solid all-over colour or a cherry cola tone for your brunette balayage. You can do this with a red glaze or a colour-depositing mask,” says Duplantis.
Muted Pastels
“Pastel hair colours are poised to make a comeback but with a twist,” says Duplantis. “Expect to see washed-out pastels with an almost vintage look.” Think soft lavender, dusty rose, and muted aqua. “[These colours are] dimensional, delicate, and faint,” says Klein. Mix light tones with dark and give your cut plenty of texture (see: Kim Kardashian) for a look that’s equal parts grungy and sexy.
Syrup Blonde
Honeyed and buttery blonde shades are gorgeous for summer, especially when coupled with a warm balayage. “This [type of] blonde has subtle highlights of gold–even with a slight peachy hue,” says Duplantis. It’s beachy, fun and always a hit on the red carpet. “It’s very reminiscent of a ‘90s shade of blonde–think Claudia [Schiffer] and Reese [Witherspoon],” says Klein. “Its rich, golden foundation has a liquid-like finish and keeps the wearer feeling light and bright.” What more could we ask for in a summer look?
