London Fashion Week: Day One
Fashion week madness officially began with NY Fashion Week. Now we’re traipsing across the world checking out shows and reporting back on key trends for spring/summer 2011. We know it’s fall and we’ve just dug out our cozy knits, but a fashion lover is always looking to the next season. Next up on our world tour is London, where our fashion insider
Grace Carroll is snapping pics and trend spotting. She’s a feisty and funky Canadian, working as an intern at
ELLE UK … who better to give us the inside scoop? Check out her Day One fun
after the jump (she scores a chic Mulberry tote!).
London Fashion Week: Day One
By Grace Carroll As I step outside of my house and head towards the tube, I rejoice in the crisp air, clear blue skies and sunshine. Ahhh, what a perfect morning to kick-off London Fashion Week! It’s 8:45am and I’m wearing a short black lace dress and snakeskin tuxedo jacket paired with black heels, vintage satchel and dark plum lips. It’s no surprise that I’m getting funny looks from passers by. After six-months of living in my part of East London, I’m quite certain that 99.99% of my neighbors have no interest in fashion, and have probably never even heard of London Fashion Week, or any fashion week for that matter. Anyhoo, off to Somerset House I go!
Upon arrival I soak in the suped-up surroundings of the home of the British Fashion Council. Most notable is the massive black tent that has been erected in the middle of the vast cobblestone courtyard – I’m giddy at the thought of new SS11 styles strutting down the runway inside. I meet up with two friends who will join me to tackle the day (so much to cover!) and I quickly take snaps of their outfits. Louise is wearing a nude mesh shirt underneath a black leather strapless mini dress, topped off with her gorgeous new Miu Miu bag. Tessa wears a classic camel trench with a dusty rose silk top and black leather skirt paired with motorcycle boots. Their looks are coincidentally coordinated and I love it!
My number one priority for Day One of LFW is to score one of Mulberry’s SS11 book bags, so I march through the main doors, corner the security guards and demand the Mulberry book bag low-down. One of them quickly points to a blonde fellow nearby and I sprint over. Flashing a smile and batting my lashes I politely ask for a bag. He definitely noticed the crazy in my eyes and quickly handed me three (one for each of us) before shooing me away — Success! Tessa, Louise and I strut around the courtyard with our new bags as if the screen-printed, cotton Alexa is even more coveted than the real thing.
The line up for our first show of the day has snaked all around the tent and up to the arched entrance of Somerset House. Clearly we are not the only ones who were late to join the queue as none other than Susie Bubble hops out of a taxi and joins us at the very end. Barely in line for more than 30-seconds and she is bombarded by photographers jumping at the chance to snap her picture. In between takes, we all catch up with her and I take a quick picture of her especially for ELLE Canada, which she happily poses for. Once the line finally starts moving we realize that we’ve only got 5 minutes until show time and we make a mad dash for the front. Tickets in hand we push our way through the crowd right before they hit maximum capacity. I am literally the very last person that slips through the door before the lights go down (woohoo!)… and so it all begins!
