Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

As the resident weirdo of the zodiac (and we mean that with all the love in the world), you need a restaurant that’s out of the ordinary. You’re someone who improvises unique flavour combinations at home all the time, so you’ll find your match in an avant-garde kitchen that puts together dishes you would never think of making. Only the most well-thought-out menu and the most well-designed dining room will impress you; bonus points if it carries a powerful socio-political message. We think you’d love a place like Vancouver’s Salmon ‘n’ Bannock, one of the city’s only restaurants to put out First Nations cuisine, and Montreal’s Candide, which offers staff benefits and fair pay (still a rarity in the restaurant world), in addition to a sustainable, ever-changing, and remarkable menu. Yum.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

At the opposite end of the spectrum from our Capricorn friends, you love all things beautiful and impractical. Going out to eat, for you, is all about #bigmood: the aesthetics and the ambiance alike. In fact, you might even consider the type of music a restaurant plays before taking a look at its menu, and you’re certainly willing to travel for a dreamy setting, whether that’s a secluded winery or an idyllic inn. Two places you would certainly love: The Restaurant at Pearl Morissette, a small-batch vineyard in the Niagara Peninsula, where you’ll get to greet pigs and cows on your way in, and where you’ll be introduced to words like “microseasonal”, and the lakefront The Drake Devonshire in Prince Edward County, where waves crashing onto the shore are the only soundtrack you really need.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Understatement of the year: you’ve got an intense personality. What you need in return are bold, fiery flavours. Oh, and you could totally just order for the whole table, because you’ve got no time to waste. For something fresh, exciting, and spicy, head to Toronto’s Birria Balam, where stewed beef tacos are served alongside an invigorating dip of braising liquid made with three kinds of chilies and Mexican cinnamon. There’s an option to add a peanut and sesame salsa to your consommé for an extra kick, but hey, gentle reminder: you don’t have to force this level of heat onto your entire dinner party. In Montreal, we could see you enjoying the spirited cuisine and lively vibe of a place like Denise.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Some say you’re the foodie of the zodiac. All we know is that you appreciate decadent, comforting meals more than just about anyone. Only one hiccup: you’re also the zodiac’s couch potato (hey, we don’t make the rules here). Take-out is often your go-to solution, but every once in a while, you’re willing to come out of your den for some soul-satisfying food in a restaurant that almost feels like home. Try Toronto’s Sugo for some classic red-sauce Italian-American cuisine and checkered tablecloths, or Montreal’s Paradis BBQ for some lip-smacking fried chicken and mashed potatoes as you sink back into a comfy banquette.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

There are two sides to your personality, and when it comes to restaurants, you can go either way: from a grungy hole in the wall to the most upscale address in town. In Montreal, that could take you from Le Coq de l’Est’s Indian-spiced poutine to Joon’s sought-after Persian, Georgian, and Armenian cuisine, all in the space of one day. In Toronto, you might go from a “slightly trashy” slice of Superpoint pizza for lunch to Guu Izakaya’s chaotic good times for dinner.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Your perfect restaurant meal should feel like you’re being fed by family. That doesn’t mean you have to gather up everyone’s dirty plates for the waiter, but we know you will anyway. Since nothing says “crafted with love” more than brunch, head to Vancouver’s Medina for some old-world charm and heart-warming waffles. After all, Medina “doesn’t simply serve food” – in their own words, “(chef Robbie) Kane and his staff pride themselves on feeding the soul of each and every guest.” For dinner, homey Montreal restaurants like Byblos or Omma should do the trick. And for an extra feel-good Sunday dinner, treat your chosen family to a slow-cooked, nonna-style meal at Toronto’s Amano.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Every night out with you feels like a special celebration, so this should come as no surprise: the restaurants on your wish list are lavish and luxurious. Go all out at a place like Montreal’s Damas, where the family-style portions suit your generous personality, or Vancouver’s Botanist, whose reviews fit you like a glove: distinctive, glamorous, whimsical… need we go on? Be sure to check out the restaurant’s glass-fronted cocktail lab for a swanky, award-winning experience you won’t soon forget.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

The picky perfectionist in you requires intricate plates with impeccable presentations (speaking of which, try not to call out the waiter if a dish doesn’t meet your standards). On the other hand, your nature-loving side is partial to earthy, farm-to-table dining. So if you’re looking for the best of both worlds, look no further than Manitoba, Montreal’s premier address for fancy foraged food. And to make sure the crew meets your cleanliness and organization standards, opt for an open kitchen concept, like Grey Gardens in Toronto, where they’ll gladly let you observe how their vibrant “new North American” food comes together.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Libras are infamously indecisive, so the best thing you can do is pick a restaurant where you won’t have to make too many choices come dinner time. An extravagant tasting menu, like the ones at Ile Flottante and Pastel in Montreal, or a place where you get to share lots of small plates, like Fleurs et Cadeaux or Toronto’s Bar Raval, are the ideal fit for your non-committal tendencies. Plus, their stylish interiors and seductive ambiance make them perfect for a flirty date night.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Some people might find you difficult or intimidating, but you simply have exacting standards. Once you find a restaurant that meets your expectations, you make it yours for life by becoming their most loyal patron. And it doesn’t have to be the hottest destination in town. In fact, you prefer a kitchen that has already proven itself worthy of your time and money. Women-owned and operated Nora Gray in Montreal likely suits your affinities – and your strongly held convictions. Plus, the moody lighting is just right for your notoriously mysterious tendencies. In honour of your water sign, you could also go for an intimate and long-established oyster and seafood bar like Blue Water Cafe, in the heart of historic Yaletown, Vancouver.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

You’re a wandering soul who’ll breezily walk into any restaurant that piques your curiosity – so long as the dress code isn’t too strict. Your spontaneous approach to dining might be hit or miss, but that’s just life, isn’t it? Truth be told, your favourite restaurants are likely somewhere in Tokyo or Cairo, but if you can set aside your thirst for travel for one evening, you’ll find equally exciting eateries in your hometown. In fact, Downtown Montreal’s Kazu might just be your dream destination: it’s fun and boisterous, just as good as the best of Japan, and your order will come out as fast as you can eat, which is perfect for someone who rarely takes the time to sit down. For a more European vibe, head to Toronto’s Bar Isabel, where the tiled flooring and arched ceiling will take you right back to some of Spain’s best hidden gems.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

As the most pragmatic, least frivolous sign of the zodiac, you don’t quite see the point in going out to enjoy a meal at a restaurant. For you, eating, like many other things in life, is a transaction: you feed yourself in order to be more productive. That’s why our recommendations are for affordable and dependable eateries. Perhaps a diner (read retro leather stools and finger food faves) and that’s been around for decades, like Beauty’s or Wilensky’s in Montreal, or a slightly upscale pub like Wolf & Workman, where you can eat what you’re used to without fear of disappointment. Or perhaps you could learn to treat yourself without going too far out of your comfort zone, with the classic cuisine of an elegant French bistro like L’Express.
