We’re still obsessing over the Manolo Blahnik leather slingbacks featured in our September issue’s “Classics Revisited”, but there’s something else catching our attention. The model’s flawless makeup and gorgeous hair can’t be ignored. We wanted to know how they did it. ELLECanada.com tracked down the shoot’s makeup and hair artist, Geneviève Lenneville, to get the answers. She dishes on her inspiration, tips and tricks and even her forecast for next season’s trends.

The inspiration

Geneviève credits the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2010-11 show for inspiring this style. “I decided to do a dry and frizzy version of the hair – a simple and loose style,” she says. “We knew that the background [for the shoot] would be busy with metal pieces and gel colors”, and the fashion choices were “very simple, with pure lines and a lot of neutrality.” To compliment all of this, Geneviève opted for a subtle look.

How to get the look

“I suggest they crimp their hair with a small crimper,” says Geneviève. Brush with a soft hairbrush, and finish off with a little hairspray.

All about texture

To create the “dry” look, Geneviève flat ironed the model’s hair from the roots to ear level. “Then I brushed the lower half of her hair, so her natural curl became wispy.”

Dark combinations

Geneviève’s emphasis on the eye-makeup came from the simplicity of the clothes and hair. “I decided to do a dark smoky eye in a round shape to create a stronger look.”

Geneviève prefers using a creamy eye shadow when attempting a smoky eye look – “it’s a lot easier for those with less experience.” This will allow for either a softer or more dramatic look, depending on the desired intensity. “The best part about the creamy eye shadow: you can apply it with your fingers, instead of a brush, for a non-perfect look!”

“I would say the ‘dewy look’ will never leave completely,” says Genevieve. She predicts both matte and silky textures for skin this fall.
