8 Pop Culture-Inspired Costume Ideas to Wear This Halloween
With items you can wear again.
by : Jennifer Nguyen- Sep 29th, 2023
ICYMI: Halloween is quickly approaching—if you’re an excessive planner, like us. While we love the spooky holiday, finding the right costume can end up being a wasteful experience. But don’t panic: preparing for the festivities is possible with conscious consumption habits and we’re on a mission to create costumes with garments you will wear again and again.
With a little bit of research and a whole lot of creativity, here are eight Halloween costumes that pack a punch and utilize beloved items that are already in your wardrobe—or should be.
The Tin Man
What he lacked in heart, he made up for in smarts. Use your brain and tap into the Tin Man by utilizing staples from the metallics trend to create this look.
Get the look: A metallic top and bottom with shoes, outerwear and accessories to match.
Boygenius
I’m trying to be “Cool About It” but if you’re contemplating trio costumes and not considering eccentric girl band Boygenius, what the heck are you thinking? Accessorize with musical instruments and red lipstick to really get the point across.
Get the look: A matching blazer and trousers set, a white button-down, a tie and red lipstick.
Elizabeth James from The Parent Trap
You may not be mature enough for this, but your costume begs to differ. Break out your big girl clothes and consult your quiet luxury faves to channel the lovable 90s character. Top off the fit with that frantic look on your face when you know you’re on the precipice of running into an ex-flame.
Get the look: Black sunglasses, a dainty speckled necklace, an off-white button-down and a hair roller.
Weird Barbie
Hi Barbie! Halloween is the perfect occasion to play (too) hard so don a pink frock and a funky boot, this costume is assured to be a hoot. Ability to break out into the splits not included!
Get the look: A pink dress, funky knee-high boots and pink tights. Draw on a colorful abstract makeup look to complete the look.
Charlie’s Angels
Grab three of your friends and raid your closet for sleek and skin-tight black garments. In homage to the action-oriented, yet stylish, trio, we’ve picked clothes you can move in. Look kickass in comfort.
Get the look: All black everything with a sleek stiletto
Carrie Bradshaw
Now I’m not going to suggest the iconic (yet impractical) tank and tutu look but rather Season 3, Episode 1’s more practical take for those chilly Autumnal eves. Grab a bunch of shopping bags, brush up on your best Carrie trot, and you’re a SHOE-in for the most fashionable at the soirée.
Get the look: A top with a ruffled hem, a check print skirt, pink boots, a fur coat and statement jewelry
Ariel from The Little Mermaid
Big fan of coquettecore? Make waves and dress up as THE Disney princess of 2023.
Get the look: A tiered blue dress, pink headband and brown sandals.
Mary Poppins
The OG ludicrously capacious bag lady. Show off your layering skills with this cold-weather and rainproof Halloween costume. Talk about practical and chic.
Get the look: A long black coat and hat, navy skirt and a multi-colour scarf. Accessorize with a duffle bag and umbrella.
