Think beyond the LBD with frilly, bright frocks.
By Jennifer Weatherhead I just spent the weekend in one of my favourite cities in the States — Boston. I love the casual vibe, the cobblestone streets, the history and the ahh-maz-ing seafood. Boston could possibly rival my love for NYC, and while it’s maybe not known for having incredible style, everywhere I looked I saw girls in super fun dresses. I was totally filled with dress envy. Suddenly, my silk Zara sundress just wasn’t doing it for me. As I was admiring nearly every dress I eyed on the street I discovered where these gorgeous frilly looks were coming from — the most adorable dress store in Boston,
PinkyOtto, at 165 Newbury Street in the Back Bay area, is a dress haven featuring racks and racks of one-of-a-kind dresses (all designed by the PinkyOtto team) in funky prints and patterns that the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Swank and Parker Posey are all fans of. Minis, cocktail dresses, casual sundresses, 50-inspired frocks … before I knew it I had spent about half an hour looking through the dresses and my arms were full of possibilities. A navy silk mini cocktail dress with cap sleeves and a sprinkle of gold stars as a pattern; a light, floaty summer dress in a blue peacock print; a black and white Mad Men-inspired number; and another cocktail dress with doves. Such decisions to make! With prices starting at about $150 US, I was quickly calculating my exemption allowance for returning to Canada. I finally opted for the pretty peacock print (I’m a sucker for a floaty, easy summer dress), but in all honesty I could have walked away with 3 or 4 chic options.
Sigh. Next time, I suppose, but I also learned that PinkyOtto has several NYC locations as well, so the chance of getting back to dress heaven is even better.
