Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

The me of five years ago would be quite surprised that I am looking forward to a movie inspired by the fantasy table-top role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, but by all accounts (a.k.a. reviews by professional critics I read many months ago), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a lot of fun! Plus, it’s hard to imagine spending a couple of hours with the likes of Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant and Michelle Rodriguez in a movie—about a ragtag group of adventurers on a treasure hunt for a long-lost relic— directed by the filmmaking duo behind Game Night would be a bad use of anyone’s time.

The Lincoln Lawyer (Season 2, Part 1)

Would I call The Lincoln Lawyer, which follows an underdog L.A. lawyer with a complicated past who does his best work in the back seat of his car, a great show? Probably not. But it is the perfect show to have on while I am, say, answering a backlog of emails or doing chores that I definitely don’t want to be doing—which is to say it is pleasant, watchable and something that does not require my brain to be fully functioning—and for that I am grateful. Season two, which is dropping in two parts, follows the titular lawyer as he starts a relationship with a woman who gets accused of murder.

The Out-Laws

You can choose the person you’re going to potentially spend the rest of your life with, but you can’t really choose your in-laws. That idea is taken up a notch (or two) in The Out-Laws, when bank manager Owen meets his fiancée’s parents for the first time…and later suspects that they robbed his place of work. Nina Dobrev, Adam Devine, Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin star.

Survival of the Thickest

It’s always great when Michelle Buteau pops up in anything, which is why the news that she has created and is starring in her own series inspired by her memoir of the same name is very exciting. Survival of the Thickest follows Mavis Beaumont, a plus-sized Black woman and struggling stylist who must attempt to rebuild her life after a recent breakup—while learning to define her own version of happiness.

Bird Box Barcelona

Back in 2018, the Sandra Bullock-led thriller Bird Box—set in a world overrun with lethal creatures that kill you if you set eyes on them—had Netflix movie audiences going wild. Now, the story continues in the spinoff film Bird Box Barcelona. The film is set in the same world, but this time follows Sebastian (Mario Casas) as he attempts to evade the creatures in Barcelona while even greater mysterious threats continue to rise.

Five Star Chef

A job interview is stressful under normal circumstances. Imagine if yours was also televised. That’s the exact premise of cooking competition series Five Star Chef, in which seven pros come together to showcase their fresh takes on fine-dining while vying for a huge prize: getting their own restaurant in London’s luxe world famous Langham Hotel.

Sweet Magnolias (Season 3)

Sweet tea (and margaritas) and summer are the perfect combo—which the core BFFs of the charming southern-set series Sweet Magnolias know very well. Season three picks up in the aftermath of last year’s brawl, which has left all of the characters facing important decisions about their relationships and lives.

They Cloned Tyrone

John Boyega, Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx are the stylish trio leading the equally stylish flick They Cloned Tyrone. The sci-fi comedy follows the unlikely group as they accidentally come across a huge government conspiracy involving cloning that sends them down a dizzying rabbit hole.

Happiness for Beginners

What does one do when they’re facing an existential crisis? Reconnect with nature, obviously. So that’s why, after going through a divorce, Helen (Ellie Kemper) signs up for an outdoor survival course in new romcom Happiness For Beginners (which is based on the Katherine Center novel of the same name). The catch? Her brother’s best friend (Luke Grimes) also happens to be on the trip, and some unexpected sparks may or may not be flying.

The Uncanny Counter (Season 2)

Paranormal Korean series The Uncanny Counter has a premise that is honestly pretty delightful: an eclectic group of people work in a noodle shop by day and, by night, use special powers to fight human-hunting malevolent spirits. Not much else is known about what’s in store for season two other than the fact that the “Counters” are still fighting the good fight, but I’m in.
