Chanel
Just as we’re beginning to defrost from this year’s winter, fashion month is looking ahead…to next winter. It’s not all bad news – if this year’s crop of shows have taught us anything, it’s that you can still have fun amidst dropping temps and early sunsets. Runways kept it playful with punk-inspired looks (feel free to cut your own bangs and embrace raccoon eyes), glistening hair and bright lips. Ahead, the best hair and makeup trends from the fall/winter 2020 runways.
Straight Brows
Exaggerated brows are commonplace on the runway, but last season’s overly manicured arches were replaced by brushed-up, elongated brows. At Moncler and Fendi, brows were kept natural, tapering off at the arch and adding a sense of sharpness to an otherwise soft look. At Brock Collection and Badgley Mischka, long, full brows added bold structure to balance out vibrant lips.

Choppy Fringe
Bangs had a punk moment. Gucci, Vera Wang and Fendi opted for a jagged, microscopic fringe while Versace went for a chunky, side swept look. Either way, it’s an edgy reprieve from the soft, wispy curtain bangs we’ve grown accustomed to seeing in warmer months.

High-shine Hair

Hot on the heels of the glass skin trend, ultra-shiny hair was widespread in New York and Milan, adding dimension to understated hair styles and natural tones. A generous dose of gloss applied to severe side parts and pin straight hair created a glazed look, complementing dewy skin and barely there makeup brilliantly.

Chin-length Bobs

Hair chopped at the jawline drew attention to face-framing shades and dangling earrings. Over at Vivienne Hu, JW Anderson and Burberry, bobs were sleek and bluntly cut. Bottega Veneta, Veronica Beard and Hugo Boss favoured a slightly tousled look, with ample texture at the ends to create body and movement.

Intense Smoky Eyes
Smoked-out eyes were spotted throughout the runways of Max Mara, Phillip Plein and Chiara Boni. Jet black shadow was swept underneath the lower lashes and all over the lid to create a look that’s half I-just-woke-up, half I’ll-kick-your-ass – an aesthetic we welcome with open arms.

’90s Lip Shades

’90s-esque brown lips were peppered throughout the runways of Pucci, Molly Goddard, Veronica Beard and Eckhaus Latta, from rusty matte browns to super-sheer milk chocolate tones. Best served with a side of flannel and a look of indifference.

Low Ponytails

At Jil Sander and Brogano, understated elegance reigned supreme with sleek, low-slung ponytails and matte red lips. Over at Self Portrait and Elisabetta Franchi, hair was kept poker-straight and neatly tied back – very sophisticated when paired with monochromatic designs.

Silver Accents

FW 20/21 ushered in a somewhat downplayed version of the Euphoria-inspired looks we saw everywhere in 2019, keeping eyes bold and faces bare. At Erdem and Armani, silver glitter was applied all over the eye, while Eckhaus Latta and Gabriela Hearst favoured a subtle metallic pop at the centre of the lid.

Hair Scarves
If the chin-length hair trend is a no for you, consider growing your mane long enough to wrap around your neck like protective scarf, as seen on the runways at Prada and Area. To achieve this look, make sure you’re protecting your ends against breakage to get a true textile effect.

Structured Wet Look

Wet-looking hair on the runway isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but adding a structural twist creates a fresh, eye-catching vibe. Use a high-shine styling gel or oil to shape hair into interesting face-framing forms.

Candy Apple Lips

Vibrant undertones of pink and orange transformed the classic red lip into a more playful version of itself. Go with matte, gloss, satin, or sheer – the most important thing is to keep it candy.
