The rules of running shoe shopping
Everything you need to know in order to cop the perfect pair.
Models have a signature walk; you have a signature gait. All of us hit the ground heel first, but if you overpronate, it means your foot collapses to the inside. Try New Balance Fresh Foam Vongo ($170, newbalance.ca), which are made of cushioned foam for extra stability.
If you roll to the outside (known as “supination” and common in those with high arches), you need a shoe with lots of cushioning. Otherwise, a small part of your foot will take the brunt of your weight, leading to injury. Brooks Ravenna 7 Running Shoes ($155, brooksrunning.com).
If your runs top out at 30 minutes, a light racing shoe is fine. Any longer, though, and you may want more cushioning and support. The Nike FlyKnit Lunarepic Low ($215, nike.com) can be used for both long- and short-distance runs.
A run through Gastown requires different shoes than a jog up the Grouse Grind. Trail shoes like Saucony Xodus ISO Runshield ($189.99, at specialty running stores) have stronger treads to prevent slipping.
