10 Natural Deodorants to Try While You Socially Distance
The time to experiment is now.
by : Melissa Fejtek- Jul 2nd, 2020

Canadians: Summer is finally upon us. As many of us look forward to outdoor outings and plenty of physical activity, things can start to get a bit sweaty. With social distancing measures still in place, now is the perfect time to experiment with natural deodorant.
Although conventional antiperspirants are not proven to be harmful, they often rely on ingredients like aluminum to block sweat from being released by the body. Natural deodorants, on the other hand, typically rely on moisture-absorbing ingredients like baking soda and plant-based starches to soak up dampness without preventing the body from doing it’s thing – sweating.
However, not all natural deodorants are made equally. Those who have dabbled with aluminum-free deodorant are aware that the journey of finding the best product for your body often involves some serious trial and error, depending on the level of sweat you produce and your sensitivity to certain ingredients (sodium bicarbonate rash, anyone?). If finding a natural deodorant that works for you seems a little intimidating, consider testing the waters during this period of social distancing. Ahead, we’ve rounded up 10 editor-approved natural deodorants that will keep you fresh all summer long.
The Effortless Swap
First foray into natural deodorants? Detox Market has you covered. Brand new to the green beauty retailer’s in-house line, Detox Mode Feeling Altogether Deodorant ($25, detoxmarket.ca) contains baking soda and cocoa butter to mimic the look and feel of a classic deodorant without unnecessary additives. For sensitive types, Feeling Free Deodorant ($25, detoxmarket.ca) skips the baking soda altogether in favour of absorbent arrowroot powder and odour-blocking magnesium hydroxide.
The Multi-Purpose Balm
L’Occitane’s latest launch, The Incredible Deodorant Recipe in Verbena ($24, loccitane.com) has a creamy, non-sticky consistency and a delightful verbena scent. It’s packaged in a recyclable tin for easy application and minimal waste. Tip: Apply a small amount on the bottoms of feet to soothe dry skin and prevent unbecoming odours.
The No-Nonsense Powder
Sweaty camping trip on the horizon? A generous dusting of Lush Dirty Deodorant Powder ($12, lush.ca) offers up a blast of invigorating fragrance that will banish even the most of heinous of body odours into oblivion. We’re talking spearmint, sandalwood, tarragon and neroli combined with peppermint powder and menthol crystals. Thank us later.
The Sensitive Skin Saviour
For those who desire odour protection sans the frills, No Pong Original Anti Odourant ($9, nopong.ca) is a formidable option. Made with only coconut oil, baking soda, cornstarch, beeswax and a blend of essential oils, this fresh-scented deodorant absorbs quickly and won’t stain clothes.
The Double-Duty Duo
Maximize your odour-blocking potential with Kaia Naturals Better Together Underarm Bar + Deodorant ($46, kaianaturals.com). First, wash away grime and deodorant residue with the charcoal-infused underarm bar. Then, apply the takesumi charcoal deodorant –which is available in six scent variations – for all day-protection.
The pH Balancer
Seeking a baking-soda free alternative to conventional deodorant? Consider swapping your go-to with Drunk Elephant Sweet Pitti Deodorant Cream ($21, sephora.com), which utilizes mandelic acid – an alpha-hydroxy acid derived from almonds – to neutralize odours without disturbing the delicate pH balance of your pits.
The Skin-Softener
Consider adding Alaffia to your list of Black-owned businesses to support. Not only does the award-winning brand support community empowerment projects in West Africa, they also make a variety of safe-to-use ultra-moisturizing deodorants and body care products. Coconut Reishi Bergamot & Charcoal Deodorant ($10, well.ca)
