Let’s face it, the messy topknot is still our go-to hairstyle for everything from easy work-friendly hair to lounging on the couch in front of Netflix.

It’s also the hairstyle favourite of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, like Saorise Ronan.

Instyle chatted to Ronan’s stylist Adir Abegel about her classic updo. After using an elastic to pull Ronan’s hair up into a messy bun at the crown of her head, Abegel updated the classic updo by wrapping a delicate gold chain around the base of her bun.

For some French girl chic, you can try ribbon. Margot Robbie led the way here a few years ago:

Robbie’s stylist Bryce Scarlett used a black velvet ribbon around the messy knot, which was positioned slightly to the right for a less “done” effect. Combined with the textured finish, this is a great option for work.

Have a fringe? No worries – make like Rihanna and style it straight but not poker-straight, letting it frame your face. In fact, you can fake a fringe with a messy topknot – just twist the ends of your hair to the front, so they become a longer, curtain fringe style.

Julianne Hough’s messy topknot is VERY chic thanks to the use of strategically placed bobby pins. Pinning your topknot to add texture and interest will keep a messy version from feeling too “just woke up” – pull out small sections around your ears and temples to make it feel more undone. This also looks chic with a headband.
