For those who are unfamiliar, jorts (or jean shorts) are shorts with a wider cut and are longer in length, ideally stopping just above the knees. Fabric can range from a classic Americana denim to an effortlessly cool cargo. The most important thing, however, is that they sit wide and loose, allowing for freer movement.

Like most trends nowadays, jorts are not a new phenomenon. They are among the many ‘90s revival looks like bucket hats and mom jeans that are coming back in style. The popularity of jorts really took off in the ‘90s, with the growing influence of hip-hop culture in New York and rappers like Mobb Deep and Ol’ Dirty Bastard rocking baggier cuts.

Nowadays, the nostalgic look is being re-embraced by It-girls like Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Emma Chamberlain and Gigi Hadid, who have been remixing the ‘90s piece with modern wardrobes. Jorts are even dominating the runways, including the Gucci Cruise 2023 collection, which featured ‘90s-inspired style rhinestone bedazzled denim jorts, and Givenchy’s Spring 2023 show, which introduced the silhouette in a darker, distressed denim.

Possibly the best thing about the trend is that it offers versatile styling possibilities. With a loose fit and casual fabric, jorts accommodate different body types and create intriguing contrasts with different pairings. For an effortlessly cool look, style your baggy jorts with a smaller, more feminine tank or crop top, to create a contrast in silhouettes and offset the more boyish cut of the jorts. Complete the look with a pair of stylish sneakers, or, a pair of chunky loafers if you’re going for a preppier look.

FYI: While you may think jorts are casual wear, they can also be the perfect going-out piece when styled with the right pieces and accessories. Pair your jorts with a tight corset to create that high-low moment, then slip on a pair of strappy sandals to elevate the look — and all of a sudden you’re club ready!

Below, we’ve curated a few pieces to help you channel the jorts aesthetic this summer.
