Blondes are having their moment in the sun this summer, and we’re all for it—as long as they follow a healthy hair care routine outside of regular poolside hours. From
refreshing blonde hair with tonal highlights to preserving a natural shine all season, we rounded up expert hair care tips for blondes from top stylists for every shade of golden.
Summer 2013 hair trends for blondes: No grey area
For summer 2013, imagine your favourite golden, honeyed locks amped up with more colour dimension. “Caramel, sand, pinks, strawberries—I call it ‘Fifty Shades of Blonde’,” says Kim Vo, celebrity hair stylist and Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME ambassador. Just look to the runway—Vo cites model Karlie Kloss’s sunkissed hair colour as the gold standard for blondes this season. “She embodies the new ombré,” he says about the look he’s appropriately termed “sombré”: blonde with light tips.

Summer 2013 hair trends for blondes: Go for a summer tune-up
This season, the prints on the runway are bolder and neons brighter, so naturally, hair is toned down for a subtle complement. “Blonde hair is softer, with more pastel tones and a natural placement of the colour,” says Stacey Staley, owner of Blonde Salon in Toronto, who suggests that natural blonde hues are replacing the stark tones of
bleached-blonde celebs like Gwen Stefani. Staley says that now is the perfect time to refresh winter-dulled blonde hair with an all-over colour, highlights, or the ombré look. “Ask your stylist for a deep treatment,” Staley adds, citing the shine-boosting properties of Kerastase Nutritive Oleo Fusion. “This will fuse moisture into your locks without weighing down.”

Summer 2013 hair trends for blondes: Remember the elements
Everything you love about summer can be potentially damaging to blonde hair. “Blondes need to be careful of the sun lightening and changing the tone of their hair colour,” says Staley. “Also, excessive perspiration when running or playing beach volleyball can yellow blonde hair.” Proceed with caution around water this summer: while swimming in the ocean can be drying, taking in a dip in pool can create a slick residue or greenish tint on hair caused by excessive copper found in the pipes or pool. Her summer blonde hair myth busted? “Chlorine won’t make your hair green,” Staley reassures. “However it will make it feel super dry!”
Think of it this way: “Blondes are like white paper flowing in the wind. Elements such as sun and water can make blondes more susceptible to brassiness,” says Vo. “Imagine blonde hair as white cloth— everything that goes through it has a possibility of yellowing it.”

Summer 2013 hair trends for blondes: Maintain colour all summer long
Liven up locks between long weekends this summer. “Toners after and in between colouring will add dimension, tone and refresh tired hair,” says Vo, who recommends Schwarzkopf Professional BlondME toner series, available in six shades. If hair isn’t quite grown out between treatments, Staley suggests going for partial touch-ups to keep colour fresh or opting for a colour gloss. For at-home hair care, try Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Wash to maintain cool, bright tones.
But sometimes old-school methods do the trick. “Mom always knew best,” Vo shares as his top non-committal tip for lightening hair naturally this summer. “Grab a water bottle and a few drops of lemon juice, and enhance your locks with a blast of sunshine.” Like you needed another excuse to lie outside.
