2020 Horoscopes: Chart Your Year Ahead
It’s 2020, which sounds terrifyingly like the future because, well, it is. Life has never been faster-paced or more complex, so we’re relieved to look to the stars this month and let them take the wheel.

ARIES
March 21 – April 19
Great news, eager Aries. If you’ve been casually dating someone this cuffing season, now is the time to make it official. So the next time your Friday- and Saturday-night hookup buddy comes over, simply tell them the planets are aligning in such a way that your sex drive and physical attractiveness will be drastically heightened as of June. And then ask: Do you want to get on board early for the summer sexcapades of a lifetime? Or do you want to be such a Gemini about it? If they freak out and leave when you admit you called their mom to get their exact time of birth, don’t worry: Your social life will be bustling all winter and into spring anyway. (Because of Mercury maybe?) However, take note, competitive soul: Where work is involved, moderation is key. If Linda from accounting is bothering you with pesky requests like “Where’s that report?” and “Why aren’t you meeting your deadlines?” ignore her, look up at the night sky and remember that the constellations are telling you to focus on one or two projects you really care about this year rather than taking on too much.
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“Since Aries can be blunt and competitive, the strong red sago palm felt appropriate to reference the shape of the fire sign’s ram horns,” says Jaime McCuaig of Toronto’s Gunnar Floral, who created the floral arrangements representing each of the 12 signs. “The grevillea is a prolific plant that flowers for most of the year – it doesn’t give up – and is not particularly delicate, while the Schinus molle, commonly known as the pepperberry tree, is a quick-growing evergreen. I used it because I like the play on fire and spice in the context of the competitive nature of the first sign of the zodiac.”

TAURUS
April 20 – May 20
The stars are pretty optimistic about your plans for spring, homebody. Namely, the constellations are suggesting that an influx of invites will have you thrilled instead of horrified and actually ditching your weighted blanket and Netflix to be the life of the party. Not likely. With all due respect to an admittedly very convincing pseudoscience, it’s 2020 – you’re not going to suddenly start attending events happily or leaving the house or making plans you actually keep. Still, the universe can dream! This constant pressure from the social butterflies in your life (cough…Geminis) is going to bring out your stubborn side, so relationships with lovers will be put to the test in the coming months. You’ll also be feeling pressure to live up to your family’s expectations, which this year is because of planetary movements and every other year because of your bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“I used yarrow because it’s a very strong flower and en masse they remind me of cracked earth, which works because Taurus is a grounded earth sign,” explains McCuaig. “Yarrow was once used to staunch the flow of blood from wounds, and that’s so strongly linked to the strength of the Taurus sign: It’s reliable and practical. Meanwhile, the Oncidium orchid, the most coveted of all ornamental plants, symbolizes the horns of the bull and is representative of luxury and beauty, which are very important to the Taurus.”

GEMINI
May 21 – June 20
Listen, Gem: It’s hard being gorgeous, quick-witted, super-smart…and the low-key villain of the zodiac. Especially when every other sign is actually as two-faced as you allegedly are – haters are loving you one moment and screaming “Why do you know everyone’s gossip and wield it as a weapon for social gain and personal entertainment?!” the next. Like, where are all the half-serious jokes about psycho Scorpios? Maybe this will be the year you finally start that meme account and get the respect from internet teens we all secretly crave. Either way, your adaptable qualities are coming to the fore because this year you’ll feel more attractive than ever, which is almost the same as being liked. Have we considered that your bad rap might come from jealousy? There’s a promotion and a soulmate in the stars for you in 2020, so either this is going to be your best year ever or ELLE Canada’s astrologer is simply a wishful Gemini. (Spoiler alert: She is!)
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“I used two bromeliad plants as ‘the twins’ in this arrangement,” says McCuaig. “Bromeliads are incredibly adaptable, just like Geminis, and able to live in a vast array of environments. I also like that these plants inspire boldness and curiosity because they are unique. The brain celosia – also known as ‘cockscomb’ – felt appropriate to reference the qualities of air-element Geminis, who are intellectual and tend to live in their head.”

CANCER
June 21 – July 22
Oh, Cancers: the big babies of the zodiac. When you’re not weeping over something someone said to you six years ago at a party or planning a life with a barista who held your gaze for an extra second this morning, you’re cautiously preparing for the worst in general – which might be wise, since 2020 looks like a doozy. Based on your astrological forecast, your year ahead is going to include a lot of earnest Instagram captions about moving on and “growth.” The planets will be putting pressure on close relationships and aligning to eliminate the people you don’t need in your life anymore. Also, in an oddly specific turn, your hobbies will apparently start bumming out your family. Crazy, right? How could anyone hate your vegan, gluten-free, low-glycemic-index edible-soap business? As an empathetic and broody Cancer, this news might be tough to take. Sure, you’re a smart, strong, independent adult who has your life together…but you’re also a water sign. The good news is that all that time spent toiling over your vision board should pay off this year: The celestial bodies say that big dreams are about to be fulfilled.
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“Cancers are very empathetic and care for others,” says McCuaig. “There is a Roman myth that says when the queen of the gods was nursing baby Hercules, some of the milk fell to earth; it formed the Milky Way along its path, and the drops that hit the ground turned into white lilies. I used peonies as well because their name is derived from the deity of healing, and they are also symbolic of prosperity, which is relevant because security and stability are important to the Cancerian. And I used amaranth, which is a symbol of immortality because it’s steadfast.”

Leo
June 23 – August 22
Bold, creative Leos are more likely to want to choose their own adventure than rely on a horoscope, but they’re also a busy bunch: Between a packed party schedule, that fickle mistress known as “work-life balance” and getting in some quality worrying about climate change, sometimes it’s just easier to leave things up to the zodiac. Plus, some of its intel for this year works no matter where Venus is in its orbit: Cherish your friendships. Stay devoted to your craft, even if it’s been a while since your last major success. If a relationship feels over, it probably is, and letting go of it will allow you to move into the next chapter of your life more easily. If your family is asking a lot from you, it might be wiser to think before responding emotionally in order to keep the love and harmony between you. Not to flatter you, Leo (since you spend enough time doing that for yourself), but you got this for 2020 – no matter what the stars have to say about it.
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“I used pomelos, which are a symbol of prosperity and good luck, because Leos have an innate ability to succeed at anything they commit to,” says McCuaig. “Strawflower is also known as the ‘golden everlasting,’ so I used it alongside painted fern and setaria grass because I like the concept that the strength of the flower never fades.”

Virgo
August 23 – September 22
It’s a bit discordant that this sign is repped by a virgin because the lovable pedant of the zodiac is also a secret freak. Is it possible that grammar nerds like you, who iron their underwear and have a favourite thickness of card stock, are just hornier than other people? Maybe. And does it seem that autumn babies with anxiety over comma splices are more likely to run kink meet-ups out of their meticulously finished basements? It sure does. You Virgos love facts, and these are just facts. You also love tidying, which is great news as this year will see you Marie Kondo-ing your personal and professional lives, clearing out habits and relationships that no longer serve you to make room for bigger loves and better goals. (Stop procrastinating and unsubscribe from all those newsletters you never read already!) But be careful to avoid burnout: Whether you’re overworking because of your star sign or because you’re a millennial permalancer with three side hustles, make sure you carve out time for your family. They spark joy, remember?
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“The soft texture and white shade felt especially appropriate for Virgo because the virgin is the sign’s symbol,” says McCuaig. “I used gypsophilia, which is said to stand for purity. Milkweed pods reference the earth because September is when the milkweed plant begins forming its seed pod, which is a beautiful, organized (so Virgo!) matrix of seeds that industriously plant themselves in the soil upon release and rest dormant until spring.”

Libra
September 23 – October 22
The indecisive Libra’s biggest issue with this horoscope will probably be deciding whether to believe it or not. If you’re all in for crystals, sacred herbs and reiki massage, you’ll heed the stars’ warning that your romantic relationships will be tested this year. (But a tarot reading probably told you that already.) If you’re still on the fence, may we sweeten the deal by revealing that September 2020 is going to be full of victories? There will be exciting professional prospects (promotion, anyone?), fun with friends (think beyond karaoke night) and the possibility of new love (in real life, not just island-based reality-TV dating competitions). Unfortunately, now that you’re on board, we’re obligated to reveal that your horoscope is also calling for a tough time with family members – although maybe that has less to do with Pluto and more to do with your aunt sharing fake news on Facebook again.
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“The primary focus of this sculpture was to create balance, referencing the symbol of Libra,” explains McCuaig. “I used both carnations and chrysanthemums because they are the traditional go-tos for communicating sentiment, be it romantic, platonic, positive or negative. They are synonymous with delivering meaning through the language of flowers. I like referencing these very obvious messengers to depict a sign that cares, above all, about relationships.”

Scorpio
October 23 – November 21
Surprise, Scorpio! You’ll be spending even more than usual on fashion items toward the end of the year, when your social calendar picks up. Is “You’ll probably be buying more clothes around holiday-party season” the most interesting prediction the planets could make? No! But should you be thrilled to have an excuse to indulge your compulsive side in a Net-a-Porter flash sale? Hell, yes. The stars also point to a new love interest arriving on the scene around the end of the year. Could you possibly have predicted that all those fresh designer duds would attract a new lover without astrological intervention? Sure. But are you excited to have a flicker of romantic hope after a summer of swiping on softboys? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! With a lot of family time on the horizon, secretive Scorps may feel panicked about parental snooping. Just make sure the conversation is focused on their lives, and keep your phone password updated. You got this.
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“Scorpio is one of the strongest signs of the zodiac,” says McCuaig. “And Scorpios are charged, passionate and full of intensity. So the gloriosa lily’s curling spiral tendrils and climbing habit are demonstrative of their strength. And since Scorpios thrive on accomplishing the impossible, the gloriosa seems to reflect that seductive magnetism.”

Sagittarius
November 22 – December 21
After a tacit name-drop in Taylor Swift’s “The Archer,” could things possibly get any better for optimistic Sagittarians in the new year? Well, yes and no. Like every other human in 2020, you’ll start the year snowed under with work projects, all of which seem to somehow require your undivided attention. Call it the universe, call it the gig economy—either way, if you hunker down and put in the work, you’ll be rewarded. In love, superficial Sags should be careful about relationships that seem too good to be true. (Remember: If they aren’t standing in any of the photos in their profile, they’re probably super-short.) Treat your characteristic restlessness to a barrage of parties, and keep an eye out for fun new friends this winter. Sagittarians mesh particularly well with Librans, Aquarians and Leos, apparently. While this may or may not be true, it’s a great excuse to break things off with a budding friend who just suggested you pay 15 actual dollars to attend their improv class’ graduation show. Since you’re too nice to get into the details of what they’ve done wrong, we suggest just calling them a Gemini and calling it a day!
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“This zodiac sign is symbolized by the arrow, which refers
to the perpetual search for wisdom and a higher purpose,” explains McCuaig. “The rhodanthe is an everlasting daisy, so it’s appropriately symbolic of persistent consciousness. Similarly, the moringa tree is one of the most universally useful plants: Every part of the tree is used as food, medicine or more. Sagittarians, like the moringa, are full of knowledge and act as a conduit for healing.”

Capricorn
December 22 – January 19
Ambitious Capricorns don’t need to be told to work hard, but the more eager sea goats among you will be pleased to hear that summer 2020 will usher in big professional developments. All that discipline was bound to pay off some time, right? The stars are also hinting at positive romantic changes, particularly if you’re open to getting out of your comfort zone. Ask yourself: Is my partner suggesting we try non-monogamy because he listened to one too many episodes of Esther Perel’s podcast or is it simply written in the heavens? Either way, taking a risk together can bring you closer in the long term. Consider applying some of that practicality to your family life too: Try not
to say anything to piss them off over the holidays, which likely means keeping some of your trademark witty observations to yourself – yes, even if your cousin is talking about starting her own jewellery line again.
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“Capricorn and the prickly pear cactus are both earthbound,” says McCuaig. “I see a similarity in the way they build walls around themselves and have a tendency toward retaliation. The way a cactus retains water also feels reflective of how Capricorns often have a fear of going without. Similarly, I see likenesses between the gloriosa and Capricorn: Both are ambitious and perseverant.”

Aquarius
January 20 – February 18
Let’s just start this one by saying that it’s objectively insane that Aquarius is an air sign and not a water sign. What is going on with that? As a too-cool Aquarian, you probably don’t care (or know) what an “air sign” even is, but if you did, you might call upon some of the communication skills you share with Librans and Geminis so you can confront the friends who haven’t been supporting you the way they used to. In 2020, the stars are encouraging Aquarians to ditch the old group chat and meet new people who bring about fresh experiences. (Or, you know, join a new group chat.) January to February and April to May are when you should work on your career goals, which is convenient because they’re also the absolute worst times to be outdoors. Sure, you Aquarians are a bit highbrow to buy into these forecasts too heavily (one might call you the Frasiers of the zodiac), but you’re also changeable as hell. So, guys, if you’re still reading this, big changes are on the horizon. It’s scary, but it’s also exciting. Just lean on your family to get you through.
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“Aquarians are creative and free-spirited – in fact, they see themselves as being very different from everyone else,” says McCuaig. “Similarly, the amaranth plant, which is also a symbol of immortality, has a unique shape. It’s so distinctive that it even has its own family of classification.”

Pisces
February 19 – March 20
Yes, astrology can sometimes seem a bit fishy, but you’re a Pisces, so that comes with the territory! Okay, that pun was absolutely horrific, but Pisceans are famously compassionate so you’ll cut me some slack. Still, there’s never been a better time to fall hook, line and sinker for astrological foretelling because according to the planets, 2020 is going to be your year. You’ll meet new and unusual people (perhaps the fabled “normal Gemini”?), spend more time with old friends and have a flirty, sexy spring. If you’ve been on the job hunt (and who hasn’t?), you’ll experience an unexpected breakthrough this year. And if you’re part of the 1 percent who’ve been working toward a promotion at a steady job, it is finally in the cards. Since you’re a distractible, intuitive Pisces who often has your head in the clouds anyway, is it such a stretch to put your head in the stars?
WHAT’S YOUR STEM SIGN?
“Hydrangeas are marsh plants that grow in aquatic environments,” says McCuaig. “In fact, their name comes from the Greek word for water. They’re also particularly sensitive, much like water-element Pisces. Altering the pH level in the soil where a hydrangea is planted will change the colour of the flower. The more acidity in the soil the bluer the bloom, which feels particularly creative and pertinent.”
