Editor's runway favourites: New York Fashion Week

by : Juliana Schiavinatto- Sep 10th, 2016

1/71

ELLE Canada

Michael Kors Collection, Delpozo and Rodarte.

Sally LaPointe

ELLE Canada

Fringe and a military jacket? I say yes all the way. Remixing is what fashion is all about nowadays.

Michael Kors Collection

ELLE Canada

The happiest show of NYFW, complete with a live performance by Rufus Wainwright, Kors delivered a line up of must-haves. The oversized, two-tone trench coat and all the beaded floral dresses literally danced on the runway.

Ralph Lauren

ELLE Canada

All the classic Ralph Lauren looks were here, from the fringe suede jackets to the fully sequinned dresses, and they were available for purchase immediately. Literally right after the show, champagne in hand, we walked into Ralph Lauren’s flagship Madison Avenue store. Everything down to the accessories was perfectly displayed and perfectly desirable.

Rodarte

ELLE Canada

Ruffles, transparency, lace, black and gold – this show was inspired by bees in a garden, and it showed. A parade of beautiful fairy like models walked sweetly around a garden installation during the show, yet the Rodarte girl cool factor was intact via leather and hardware detailing.

Delpozo

ELLE Canada

Dreamy detailing, impeccable construction, and exquisite accessories make up Delpozo’s impossibly beautiful collection. These looks were fit for a queen, and could make for a very special wedding day look for brides who think outside the box.

Narciso Rodriguez

ELLE Canada

As always, perfect precision at Narciso. This liquid metal-like dress paired with the orange bag and white shoes is the definition of easy chic summer dressing.

Marc Jacobs

ELLE Canada

I arrived one minute late to the show, and missed the first look on the runway. Marc does not wait for anyone. I got caught up quickly though, as the Marc girl was consistent on the runway – a sexy gang of rave kids, rebellious but sweet. They stomped around on stage with their massive boots, and embellished little jackets. It was a reminder that life should be a party, and you can rebel if you want to.

Beaufille

ELLE Canada

The models at Beaufille’s presentation were so cool, I wished I could sit with them. The wide leg plaid pants and matching top was a standout for me, but the entire collection had a high desirability factor.

Hugo Boss

ELLE Canada

Colour, art and athleticism came together at the Hugo Boss show. The pure ease of the brightly hued pleated dresses worn with graphic sandals was something the entire audience wished they could slip into at that very moment.

Vera Wang

ELLE Canada

The black suit looked completely reconstructed at Vera Wang, cut into little shorts and shoulder-baring cropped jackets worn over white tank tops. Dark and poetic, the collection was virtually all black but romantic at heart.

Coach

ELLE Canada

If you’re feeling rebellious, wish you could be part of a girl gang, and love Elvis, you would be in heaven at the Coach show. These girls were tough in their leather jackets, sheer Prairie print dresses and souped-up moccasins.

Kaelen

ELLE Canada

Can we talk about this floral suit, and this model? Between the sandy colours and the baby bell sleeves, this is the suit of the season with an attitude.

Tory Burch

ELLE Canada

A parade of prints, this show was the perfect mix of preppy and beachy, perfect for a relaxed but carefully put together woman. This floral bra top and maxi skirt look was a crowd favourite.

Anna Sui

ELLE Canada

It was a mash-up of Western and romance at Anna Sui. Bella and Gigi Hadid walked in the show back-to-back wearing romantic pastel-hued looks that were sweet and naughty at the same time.

DKNY

ELLE Canada

This unfinished sweatshirt paired with oversized track pants looked fresh, and all the parachute jackets and jumpsuits were on point. PS: Bella Hadid opened the show looking so hot, I may forgotten what she was wearing.

Ji Oh

ELLE Canada

This is what the shirt and pants of the new generation look like.

Thom Browne

ELLE Canada

One of my favourite shows yet, Thom can make us laugh, dream and think all at the same time. That attitude translated into his garments, which are full of wonder, quirk and intelligence. This look was my personal favourite, but the Palm Springs retro vibe of the show will capture many hearts this season.

Vivienne Tam

ELLE Canada

In theory, a Western shirt and a silver foil NASA logo dress shouldn’t work, but sometimes theories are wrong. When paired with a fresh white sneaker, this look is quirky and new.

Jeremy Scott

ELLE Canada

The ’80s were alive at Jeremy Scott’s show. This NYC look will most definitely be worn by one of the Hadid sisters.

Zero + Maria Cornejo

ELLE Canada

No shoes? No problem. When the rest of the look is this relaxed and chic, you can go barefoot. (Ok, maybe only indoors.)

Carolina Herrera

ELLE Canada

A denim ball gown worn with flat shoes? Sign me up. Contemporary, sophisticated yet easy. This is the new modern.

Proenza Schouler

ELLE Canada

Best show of the season for me so far. I had chills the whole time, and every look was perfect. This striped knit look with a textured feathered skirt says it all.

Rag & Bone

ELLE Canada

Basically everything a girl needs this spring: a pretty floral dress, an oversized utility jacket, something patent and something blue. Sold.

Libertine

ELLE Canada

Sometimes fashion can and should be irreverent. It’s ‘berry’ important.

Zac Posen

ELLE Canada

No other polka dot ball gown has ever looked better or more modern.

Lela Rose

ELLE Canada

No caption needed.

Erin Fetherston

ELLE Canada

A sequinned jumpsuit with flip flops? Who knew this would be such a perfect match.

Jenny Packham

ELLE Canada

This patchwork, colour-blocked dress is so effortless and yet can command any room you enter.

3.1 Phillip Lim

ELLE Canada

Lim always makes pieces every girl wants to wear. It’s a skill so few designers have. Sometimes these solid designers are taken for granted. One look at this outfit and I’m sure you’ll want it or know someone who would.

Prabal Gurung

ELLE Canada

When this dress walked past me on the runway, everything stopped. And isn’t that how every girl wants to feel? Pleated extra long bell sleeves looked like angel wings. Bonus: our November cover girl Ashley Graham, who sat right by me at the show, also approved.

Hood by Air

ELLE Canada

You know you’ll have to get your name on a waiting list for this t-shirt, right? Right after Rihanna gets hers, you and I may not get a chance.

Altuzarra

ELLE Canada

This was a refreshingly positive show from Altuzarra, which included sweet little cherry-printed dresses and matching tights, lemon embroideries, and killer bright hoop coloured earrings. Python and cargo jackets gave the styling some edge. Flirty and feminine but a little rock ’n’ roll – the best of both worlds.

Victoria Beckham

ELLE Canada

Possibly Victoria’s best collection yet, this crushed velvet lilac dress does it for me. Worn with the buttery white leather boots and white bag, and paired with the super sleek hair and makeup, the look is flawless.

Gypsy Sport

ELLE Canada

Definitely the most entertaining show I’ve been to so far. The commentary during the show was so much fun (by MCs Oscar 1992 and Jay Boogie) and made a hard edged collection feel light and joyful. This slip dress over a bright sweatshirt was my favourite look.

Scotch & Soda

ELLE Canada

Scotch & Soda’s presentation was a feast for the eyes, and a bohemian Western garden party. This rose gold leather and embroidered culotte is on the ELLE Canada must list.

J. Crew

ELLE Canada

J.Crew did not hire models this season, instead they used real people who just looked amazing in the clothes. This cargo ruffled gown was a standout. Also, I need her glasses.

Tibi

ELLE Canada

Tibi delivered a modern woman’s dream wardrobe. Utilitarian with hints of the Edwardian era in the detailing, every look was perfectly functional yet dreamy.

Jonathan Simkhai

ELLE Canada

Kylie Jenner and our November cover star Ashley Graham were both front row at Jonathan Simkhai’s’s show. As an insanely gorgeous lineup of feminine ivory, blush and embellished looks passed me by, I couldn’t help by stare at this completely new, upscale take on the denim jacket and ripped denim trouser.

Self Portrait

ELLE Canada

Get to the gym: cutouts, jumpsuits and bodysuits are going to happen next summer whether you like it or not. This one combines all 3 effortlessly, and the Bermuda length is so fresh.

Alexander Wang

ELLE Canada

Tomboy-meets-sweet-surfer-girl was the look at the fast-paced Alexander Wang show last night. Models got a cropped ’do backstage and all looked too cool for school, literally. Plus: Madonna, Kylie Jenner, and Zoe Kravitz were all there. Wang surprised us all with the announcement of his Adidas X Wang collab right after the show, complete with a mob of models rushing to #WANGFEST, the after party where we all ate McDonalds, shoplifted  (just kidding, it was free) the pop up 7-eleven truck and danced the night away with CL.

Christian Siriano

ELLE Canada

Stripe on stripe? Check. Bra over shirt? Check. Somehow Christian Siriano managed to make this look understated and on point.

A Detacher

ELLE Canada

Oversize mechanic style denim jumpsuits can be feminine too, as proven here. Get with it.

Adam Lippes

ELLE Canada

Ok, so by now we know NYFW is loving stripes. But matching a bold colour bootie to your look is a new and forward-thinking way to style a simple striped dress.

Banana Republic

ELLE Canada

Who knew brown suede, peach and snakeskin could look so right together? If you didn’t know, you do now.

Jill Stuart

ELLE Canada

For every romantic out there: don’t fret, pretty is still in. For an updated cool factor, try a soft floral dress with a pastel-coloured knit armband.

Lacoste

ELLE Canada

Lacoste’s show proved that terrycloth, sweats and robe dressing can be glamorous. This deconstructed green sweatshirt needs to happen in my life.

Dion Lee

ELLE Canada

Dion Lee’s show was full of must-haves with a futuristic athletic appeal. This translucent parachute style jacket was like poetry in motion, and no words can do it justice.

Ryan Roche

ELLE Canada

The Kardashians made head-to-toe nude famous, but Ryan Roche does it right. Tip: style a nude look with the most coveted piece of the season: an oversize robe cardigan.

Diane von Furstenburg

ELLE Canada

Jonathan Saunders’ first collection for DVF is what every girl needs, and a completely updated look for the label. This dress says it all.

Akris

Perfection from beginning to end. The orange dress was a standout for me, and the monochromatic red looks were magnificent. There were tiny little purses in matching colours to the looks, and they will certainly be on every girls hit list.

Cynthia Rowley

Extra long sleeve shirts are now the new wardrobe staple – it even looks great under a sweet little dress. Loved this look.

Baja East

This silk blouse and acid wash wrap skirt with slippers is possibly the best summer look I’ve seen in my life. She looks boss and chill at the same time. Amazing.

Monse

Monse has managed to stay at the top of all the fashion lovers’ lists the last few seasons, and this look proves why. P.S. Mixed stripes looked strong on the runways here at NYFW.

Club Monaco

Showing in NYC for the first time, Club Monaco had pieces everyone needs to include in their rotation. This oversize flower print dress was a favourite, and its subtle sexiness can take you from work to date night.

Milly

Loved every minute of the Milly show, and the deconstructed dresses in bold colours were just stunning. The full look is perfect, but you can break it all up and mix anything with denim and voila.

Zimmermann

I missed this show because of traffic, and when I saw the pictures online after I was green with envy of anyone who got there on time. This Ruffled blouse and white track pant has to happen in the pages of ELLE Canada come Spring.

Cushnie et Ochs

This coral look on fellow Canadian model Herieth Paul was a moment to remember. Forever and ever. Sleek and sexy to the max.

Jason Wu

It was a select few that got into this show, and I managed to find myself across from Anna Wintour. (She approved of the whole collection by the way) This was quite possibly his best show yet, and the yellow sheer dress was the moment when everyone gasped a little. Precision, grace and class. Bravo, Jason.

Tanya Taylor

Get ready for vacation – this whole collection was literally a playground of summer looks. The colourful sand boxes, all the embellished slippers, raw denim blouses, printed dresses, striped wrap skirts, and uber light leather maxi skirt should be in your suitcase for that vacation you need to plan asap.

Phelan

I loved this show. The performance, the luxe yet underground vibe of it all felt very right now. Watch out for this label. The corset bra style over the white shirts was such a moment; we all need to try this at home (just not your nude bra please).

Thakoon

Thakoon ‘s show was full of see now buy now looks, and the elevated 90’s aesthetic made plaid and lace look like best friends.

Creatures of Comfort

One of my favourite shows so far. Every look that came out was a “I want to look like that” moment. The red boots are already on my list.

Marissa Webb

Marissa Webb mixed ruffles with fierce leather paper bag waist pants that felt so right together.

Hellessy

Red is popping up literally at every show so far, and this take on Pijama dressing is irresistible.

Creatures of the Wind

This was such a sweet, quirky and angelic show from beginning to end. The music, performed by Julee Cruise, set the perfect stage for looks like this retro style printed dress worn with cool silver boots.

Rachel Comey

These pants looked like they could give any cool blouse a run for its money. I loved this simple top with these amazing seafood green ruffled pants.

Nicholas K

Nicholas K’s entire line up would look perfect in a Star Wars movie, on the most fashionable characters of course. This soft leather trench was a standout.

Tommy Hilfiger

This show was the most fun I’ve had since the resort destination collections. I ate fries, drank lemonade, ate a strawberry doughnut, and got to see Gigi, Taylor Hill and Taylor Swift. Also, will.i.am and I had a moment staring at each other (I think). So basically the perfect night. Now I want anything with a Tommy logo on it (particularly the red track suit). I have a feeling you will too.

Tome

ELLE Canada

Who says plus sized girls can’t wear real fashion? Layered and bold, this look was a standout in the while lineup. Bravo Tome.

Oscar de la Renta

ELLE Canada

A more youthful Oscar de la Renta collection was shown today, and this dress proved as such. It could be worn by a 20-something or a 60-something any day of the week. The collection will garner a new clientele without alienating the existing customer.
