6 Small-Batch Canadian Drinks That Just Scream Summer
Get them before they’re gone!

Ursa Major Winery, Wiseacre Farm Distillery
Summer is here, which means we’re thirsty. From craft beers that do good and a Cab Franc that’s actually white to a zero-alcohol Piquette from Canada’s sparkling house, here’s what we’re sipping all summer long.
“Dam Mast Qalandar” Vin Gris, Ursa Major Winery
Last summer, the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia faced an onslaught of wildfires, making much of the Valley a smoke fest. That’s why Ursa Major winemaker Rajen Toor quickly shifted plans for his Cabernet Franc grapes to avoid the possibility of smoke taint. Toor decided to direct press the hand-harvested grapes to make a beautiful Cabernet Franc that is white instead of red—think of it as essentially an unfined and unfiltered rosé without fermenting on the skins. On the nose, expect apricot blossom, Thai basil and graphite, while the palate explodes with peachy, orange liqueur notes and even Jolly Ranchers. Like with many of Toor’s wines, he ties his own South Asian heritage into the storytelling: “Dam Mast Qalandar” Vin Gris shares a Qawwali poem from the 13th century.

“Really Good Friends” Saison, Little Beasts Brewing
Little Beasts Brewing’s head brewer Erin Broadfoot teamed up with Ren Navarro, founder of Beer. Diversity. and beer columnist Robin Leblanc for their “Really Good Friends” Saison. It’s light and pillowy in body (with softer carbonation when you compare it to their other brews) and jam-packed with flavour with big notes of white pepper and sauvignon blanc, lifted by bright lemon and gooseberry. “Advocating for the LGBTQ community has always been important to me,” shares Ontario-based Broadfoot. “Having two children who fall under the umbrella only furthers my passion in this area.”

Loud and Proud Tiny IPA, The Kensington Brewing Company
The Tiny IPA from The Kensington Brewing Company based in Ontario, may contain just 4% abv, but deep down inside, it’s a refreshing, medium-bodied beer with a big heart. Brewed in partnership with Beer. Diversity. and Escarpment Labs—their largest collab to date—this hazy IPA hopes to make a not-so-tiny impact by donating 25 cents from every can purchased to Rainbow Railroads. Hop-forward using a newly developed yeast strain called Thiol Libre, the easy sipper is “A beer science-y way of saying big flavour in a small package,” says head brewer Johnny Briggs. Like a New England-style IPA but without the heaviness of a higher alcohol content, expect notes of citrus, tangerine and clementine and a semi-dry finish.

Rhubarb Gin Liqueur, Wiseacre Farm Distillery
Wiseacre Farm Distillery is a gorgeous, teeny-tiny micro-distillery located in South East Kelowna, British Columbia. (And on that farm, there is a cow, four donkeys, and a flock of chicken ladies.) For their second annual Rhubarb Gin Liqueur limited release, they’ve teamed up with Helen’s Acres, a community farm non-profit growing food to combat food insecurity in the area. The surplus rhubarb from this year’s harvest was then hand-chopped, macerated, then blended with their premium gin, making the tart but sweet liqueur bright pink—and oh-so-summer ready. With a delicately herbaceous quality on the palate, use it in everything from a Paper Plane to Gin Sour. Each batch only yields between 80 to 100 bottles—with two to three runs if Mother Nature permits.

Piquette Zero, Benjamin Bridge
For Nova Scotian wine wizards, Benjamin Bridge, creating extraordinary sensory experiences connected to a sense of place is at the heart of everything they do. Of late, there has been a massive boom in low-to-no-alcohol beverages across Canada, especially in the easygoing Piquette category. Benjamin Bridge decided to kick things up a notch by creating Piquette Zero: a fresh, non-alcoholic, sparkly wine-like beverage with the trademark aromatics we’ve come to expect from winemaker Jean-Benoit Deslauriers. Unlike other drinks that are de-alcoholized to the point where they lose their character, Benjamin Bridge starts from the ground up. So, it’s a grape infusion with layers of complexity and texture from the Citra hops and artisanal sea salt from the Bay of Fundy to lift those zesty lemon and lime notes from the skins.
Price: $43 (for a case of 12 cans)
2021 Joue Rosé, Averill Creek Vineyard
Hot off the heels of hosting Canada’s Noir Fest, Averill Creek Vineyard is rolling out the new vintage of their super-natural Joue Rosé. “The Joue Rosé truly is one-of-a-kind,” says Winemaker Brent Rowland. Borrowing techniques used to make red, white and orange wine, Rowland combines them in one ferment to develop an expression that’s unique to them. “The result is a rosé that is full of flavour and personality but has no [residual] sugar.” Compared to previous years, the 2021 vintage includes the addition of Gamay and a touch more Gewürztraminer, giving the bone-dry, unfiltered blend an intense vibrancy with bright fruit flavours and a dried flower savouriness. Try it with a classic wood-fired Margherita pizza, steak tartare, and loads more.
