13 Hand Creams the ELLE Canada Editors Swear By
Dry hands? We have the solution.
by : Melissa Fejtek- Mar 25th, 2020
We know that one of the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is by perfecting your hand-washing technique. As we dutifully scrub away (for 20 seconds at the minimum!) even the most supple of hands are bound to become dry. Ahead, the ELLE Canada team shares the moisturizers that have brought their spirits joy and their hands sweet relief.
Vanessa Craft, editor-in-chief
“Lesa Hannah gave me the Chanel egg and obviously I am into it because 1. It’s Chanel 2. It looks like an objet d’art 3. It brings a little luxury into my day.” Chanel La Crème Main ($70)
Victoria DiPlacido, digital director
“I realized I had been sleeping on Lush body lotions after using and loving the Lush Snowflake Body Lotion that came out for holidays (sadly, it was limited edition). I’ve been using this floral-scented one in lieu ever since. I keep it beside the sink and slather it up to my elbows every time I was my hands, which is often, but the tub feels endlessly full.” Lush Pansy Body Lotion ($25)
Victoria DiPlacido, digital director
“I used my time in self-isolation to try and reintroduce my skin to prescription retinol, and let’s just say I did too much, too fast. I’ve been using an old tube of this very soothing, antibacterial cream (it says “balm” but I think it goes on like a medium-weight moisturizer) to fix my sad red face and then put it on my hands too.” La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 ($16)
Victoria DiPlacido, digital director
“I use this before bed and as a treatment on my thumbs, which for some reason are much drier than the rest of my hands, in the day. It’s definitely the thickest option of the moisturizers I’ve suggested, but it isn’t overly greasy, I promise. It absorbs super well.” Lano Everywhere Multi-Cream Allover ($23)
Patricia Karounos, Associate Editor
“Other than coffee, L’Occitane’s almond-enriched hand cream has been my truest companion while self-isolating. It’s effective, its subtle scent is calming and it doesn’t feel greasy – which means I can apply and then immediately pickup my phone and start scrolling through TikTok without it becoming gross. Plus, the brand has a recycling program, which means I can bring back all my empties whenever we’re allowed to leave the house again.” L’Occitane Almond Delicious Hands ($25)
Jed Tallo, Art Director
“I switch between two hand creams, depending on my mood and time! I use Aesop Rind Concentrate Body Balm ($47) when I have more time and want to massage my hand a bit – the smell and texture creates a wee spa moment.”
Jed Tallo, Art Director
“The other product I have on rotation is Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream ($8) – this one is when I need a quick, no-frills application, no smell to distract me, purely utilitarian.”
Christina Tourloukis, editorial assistant
“The best hand cream of all time (take my word) is Weleda Skin Food ($23.50). It is literally the only thing keeping my hands from falling off with all the washing. It’s super rich and hydrating, beauty director approved, and multi-purpose – try it on dry cuticles or cheekbones in need of some highlight action.”
Melissa Perdigao, beauty editorial assistant
“Lately I’ve been very attached to my tube of Nuxe Rêve de Miel Hand and Nail Cream ($12). It absorbs quickly, which is important because I despise the sensation of washing just-lotioned hands. The delicate honey scent reminds me that we finally made it to spring.”
Erica Ngao, fashion editorial assistant
“The lavender-scented version of this cult hand cream has been my BFF in self-isolation. As someone who has dry hands even when I’m not over-washing, the light texture soothes my skin without being overly greasy and the lavender comforts my soul.” L’Occitane Lavender Hand Cream ($25)
Erica Ngao, fashion editorial assistant
“A more budget-friendly lavender-scented lotion I love is this J.R. Watkins Co Hand Cream ($10.50). Its lovely lavender fragrance lingers through several washes and doubles as a light perfume.”
Elaine Jyll Regio, fashion and market editor
Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream ($22) checks off all the boxes for me – non-greasy, nourishing, protective and it has a slight fragrance that I find soothing. I like taking a moment to look away from my screen and really massage the lotion into my hands and cuticles.”
Hannah Ziegler, digital editorial assistant
“As far as I’m concerned, if you find a body lotion you love, you can use it on your hands too – Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion ($12.50) is my go-to for hands and body. It’s fragrance-free, non-greasy and is a lifesaver for dry skin in the winter.”
