The Joe Fresh show is a big draw at every Toronto Fashion Week; this year’s fall/winter collection sparked eager anticipation as usual, but with added buzz. In-the-media-spotlight healthy-sized model Crystal Renn was booked to walk the runway. Backstage pre-show, we observed as Eddie Malter, Artistic Director for LG Fashion Week, Beauty by L’Oréal Paris, began her makeup application.

“It’s not a lot of makeup,” Malter noted. “It’s about perfect skin.” On Renn he used Visible Lift Eye Line Minimizing Concealer, followed by two shades of True Match liquid foundation, one light and one two hues darker. The lighter shade highlighted the centre of Renn’s face and the planes of her cheekbones; the other added warmth to her hairline, temples, just under cheekbones and outer jawline. To set the foundation and give skin a velvety finish, Malter used True Match Super Blendable Powder, also in two shades.

On the apples of Renn’s cheeks, Malter applied True Match Super-Blendable Blush in Rosy Outlook with a small brush and circular motions, with a finishing up-sweep flourish toward the hairline. At Renn’s request — “I have a little brow obsession,” she confessed — he filled in her brows. For that he used the darkest brown in Wear Infinité Eye Shadow Quad #814, Earthscape, and with the same shade added subtle depth to the outer vee of Renn’s lids and lower lashlines. A few flicks of Telescopic Explosion Mascara defined her lashes (it’s Renn’s usual mascara, it turns out) and finished the look. Lips were left bare, save a little of Renn’s own lip conditioner, a macadamia-nut oil balm she’d received on a Lufthansa flight — the airline gives travelers a little bag of airplane-friendly samples, she said. Note: Renn used a Skin Genesis Micro-Smoothing Wet Cleansing Towelette to buff lips smooth before balm.

The look for hair was “about extremes,” said Eric del Monaco, Lead Hair Artist. Read on about the inspiration behind the voluminous locks at Joe Fresh at
