Whether it be in the fashion, beauty, or lifestyle sectors, creatives from within the Black community never cease to impress us with their entrepreneurial prowess—and ability to bring trailblazing labels to life. From Canadian-born businesses like Téjahn Burnett to international revolutionaries like Diotima and Eadem, we invite you to take a look at ten of our favourite Black-owned brands from all categories this Black History Month.
Diotima
Instantly identifiable by its carefully crafted crochet and threadwork inspired by the islands, Diotima is the clothing label founded by CFDA Emerging Designer of the Year 2023 Rachel Scott. With an emphasis on amplifying artisanal communities in Jamaica, where all of the brand’s crochet is made, Scott aims to broaden the definition of “luxury” beyond European borders. “Through Diotima, I seek to present a seductive and nuanced vision of Caribbean style, looking to the future while remaining grounded in history and my lived experience as a Jamaican,” she shares in a brand statement.
Téjahn Burnett
Toronto’s very own Téjan Burnett is a contemporary footwear brand that focuses on designing size-inclusive high heels, boots and hand-crafted sandals for women. Brought to life by a self-taught Canadian-Jamaican designer (who lends her name to the label), this brand fuses functionality and femininity to bring forth footwear you simply have to have. As seen on style icon Cardi B, the signature Simijah sandal ($380.62) features a corded lace-up heel with caged detailing that deserves a spot on your shoe shelf.
Goodee
Founded by twin brothers and designers Byron and Dexter Peart in 2017, Goodee is the curated digital marketplace that highlights transparently-sourced and ethically-made homeware and lifestyle offerings. From covetable hand-woven baskets by Baba Tree to cozy cushion covers designed by Tensira, Goodee’s Black Artisan Made category conveniently lists the pieces crafted by Black-owned brands and artists for you to sift through further.
Vavvoune
Brooklyn-born accessories brand Vavvoune is the maker of “passionately made pieces” designed to evoke emotions like curiosity, individuality and spontaneity. In the name of sustainability, the designs recycle Italian leathers left behind by high-end fashion labels. “Vavvoune” stems from the name of brand founder Valérie Blaise, who obtained the nickname from relatives during her childhood in Haiti.
Eadem
Seeking to deliver “bare skin confidence for people of colour,” Eadem is the beauty brand concocting skincare innovations made with melanated skin in mind. Utilizing trademarked Smart Melanin Beauty technology, Ivory Coast-born Marie Kouadio and Taiwanese-American co-founder Alice Lin have put together a women of colour-led team of chemists and dermatologists to help deliver the most inclusive results. With a name that translates to “the same” or “all” in Latin, this brand illuminates the invisible bond shared between POC and how we care for our skin.
Homage Year
Birthed by first-generation Jamaican-American designer Antoine Manning following the unforeseen passing of his father, Homage Year is the fashion brand paying homage to the black community and culture with every purse and piece of jewelry it crafts. Best known for its vegan leather bags—like the Homage Ova Manifestation Bag ($269.44) pictured above—in vibrant hues of pinks, greens and yellows, Homage Year is forever wowing us with its artistry and attention to detail.
Lichen
A self-titled “design incubator and studio,” Lichen is a New York-based interior design haven that offers a mix of ready-to-ship items and one-of-a-kind furniture constructed in-house. With a selection of modern masterpieces and statement objects sure to elevate any space, look no further than Lichen for your next home makeover.
Edas
From the mind of creative director Sade Mims comes Edas, a modern collection of eclectic accessories we’re currently obsessed with. One scroll through the brand’s Instagram and you’ll get a feel for their prismatic collection of handbags, wallets, and must-shop jewelry—including the Ada ring ($180.39) shown above. Armed with an Edas piece, you’ll be the centre of attention in any room.
Listen B*tch
Life-long friends Michelle Osei-Bonsu and Daniela Angelucci Rizzi are the duo behind Listen B*tch, a Canadian brand selling affirmation cards and journals made to help boost morale and kick negative self-talk to the curb. “When imposter syndrome starts to creep in or when self-doubt starts to weigh you down, Listen B*tch affirmation cards can help dust you off and remind you who the f*ck you are,” reads the brand’s founder statement. Say it louder for the people in the back!
Daily Paper
A product of Hussein Suleiman, Jefferson Osei and Abderrahmane Trabsini’s brilliant imagination, Daily Paper is a modern streetwear label for men and women inspired by the founders’ common African roots (Suleiman of Somalian descent, Osei of Ghanian descent, and Trabsini of Moroccan descent). What once began as a personal blog in 2008 has now transformed into a creative community of the fashion-forward, landing the brand collaborations with major style players like Adidas and Off-White along the way.
