The fanny pack has undergone the kind of awkward-to-glam transformation usually reserved for a pivotal scene in a ’90s high-school romcom. The belt bag, as it’s now known, made appearances on the spring runways of Stella McCartney, Kenzo and Rag & Bone. Ashley Cimone and Moya Annece, founders of Brooklyn brand Ashya, think that the polarizing accessory is no passing trend. The brand, which specializes exclusively in belt bags, doesn’t abide by seasons; the debut collection, which launched this year, is available year-round.

Ashya’s gender-neutral bags feature multiple compartments and slots to hold the essentials – and only the essentials – to encourage minimalism. “We’re challenging customers to appreciate their beauty as well as their utilitarian value,” says Annece. Just don’t call it a fanny pack, okay?
