Thigh-High Boots

What do we like about the mid-thigh boot, besides the fact that it gives the impression of having extra long legs? For one, they protect our legs against the icy gusts of wind. And even if we can hardly imagine Matthew M. Williams at Givenchy or Isabel Marant taking into account the Canadian winter when designing their waders, we still appreciate the function that comes with it. Leather or knit, fitted or loose, high or flat heel, pointed or round toe: as long as it’s above the knee, we’re good.

Western Boots

“These boots are made for walking,”  sang Nancy Sinatra in 1966. Was she talking about cowboy boots ? It doesn’t matter, that’s the look we had in mind when looking at the winter catwalks and the dozens of models who had them on their feet. At Chloé, Gabriela Hearst bet on the classic codes of this Wild West emblem: square toes, curved uppers, oblique heels and company. Others, like Annakiki, Fendi and Missoni, preferred to give it a makeover with metallic leathers, a mule silhouette or even a stiletto heel.

Singular Details

Is it a deep need for lightness that explains the abundance of shoes decorated with fun details this season? From the balloon-like heel about to explode at Loewe, true to Jonathan Anderson’s conceptual humor, to the plumed pumps like an exotic bird at Nina Mounah, we’d tend to say “yes.” On a daily basis, we bet on surprising additions, whether it is a sole of vitamin color, a heel with an unusual silhouette or any other touch that makes us want to smile.

Mary-Janes

Recognized by the strap(s) on the top of the foot and the rounded cutout to the toes, Mary Jane shoes have become iconic designs over the decades. What’s new for 2023? They’re shedding all juvenile references and playing it cool with unusual interpretations: a multi-strap model at Emporio Armani, a western silhouette at Prada and a vertiginous heel at Bottega Veneta.

Ballet Flats 

Trends are good, but comfortable trends are even better. To the delight of our feet traumatized by (frighteningly) high platforms-yes, we’re talking to you Pier Paolo Piccioli! ballerinas are back in style. In satin, extra soft leather or decorated with precious beading, they are worn wisely with long and ample silhouettes, as at Cecilie Banhsen, or on the contrary, all leg with a sporty preppy look as at Miu Miu.
