When it comes to the landslide of ’90s and ’00s trend revivals the fashion world has witnessed over the past few years, most we saw coming. Tie-dye was inevitable, as were bucket hats, wide leg pants, men in crop tops, low-rise jeans and ‘Dad sneakers’—bike shorts were, perhaps, on the higher end of the unexpected. But one we absolutely did not expect to see make a return is the exposed g-string.
Cast your mind back to Paris Hilton in low-rider jeans, Britney Spears making her VMAs debut in a bedazzled nude suit reveal, Gillian Anderson at the 2001 Vanity Fair Oscars party or any one of the more risqué club looks between 2000 and 2003, and memories of the exposed g-string come rushing back. Whether embellished (!) or plain, hiking the side-straps of your underwear up over your hips and out of your pants, or even wearing your pants low enough to reveal it from the back, was commonplace enough fifteen-something years ago.
And thanks to Versace—and Bella Hadid’s incredible abs—it’s on its way back. Hadid jumpstarted the trend on the Versace Spring/Summer 2019 runway, wearing a pair of low-slung black pants and gold-accented g-string underneath, prompting our bewildered minds to wonder, ‘Is that in again?’
Hailey Bieber—in custom baby pink Alexander Wang—also championed the trend in May at the Met Gala, where Jennifer Lopez was ahead of the curve and wore a Natasha Zinko look in November.
Cut to the present and we’re thinking about Euphoria‘s Alexa Demie Aka Maddy Perez, who sported the exposed g-string look on and off the show—and, honestly, who could forget Aussie legend Kim from Kath & Kim‘s rendition of the trend? Other fans include pop juggernaut Dua Lipa, who sported the “whale tale” at an intimate party with friends as well as actress Rowan Blanchard.
How would we recommend wearing this particular trend? Bravely.
Below, we’ve strung together all best the visible G-string outfit inspiration for the bold.
