If you’re a fan of
Kate Middleton’s royal style, this is your year to shine in the fashion department. The Fall 2013 runways were adorned with gold crowns, elaborate dresses and rich jewel tones that would look at home in the Tower of London. The tricky part? Off the catwalk, the OTT royal look can veer towards the costume-y. Erin Nadler, a Toronto stylist and the president of Better Styled Inc., shares her expert fashion tips on how to wear royal style right this winter.

First, what is the Fall 2013 royal fashion trend?

This season’s royal fashion trend is more abstract than other essential Fall 2013 trends like straight-up plaid or pink. So, what pieces should be on your winter shopping list? “The royal style trend is all about expensive fabrics, beautifully sewn sequins, strong colours and textures,” explains Nadler. “And don’t forget diamonds!”

Your muse:
Kate Middleton in Jenny Packham—although you don’t need to have a budget like the Duchess to rock royal style. As Nadler points out, “Royals like Kate Middleton have steered away from opulence, instead appealing to the masses with more ‘attainable fashion’. Kate’s style is simple yet sophisticated, something we can all achieve.” On the Fall 2013 runways, the trend was most popular at Valentino, Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana.

How to wear it: We’re talking amethyst, ruby and emerald hues—the colours of the most beautiful popular gemstones. For those who live in basic black, Nadler advises starting slow by adding punchy accessories to your neutrals. “Add a chunky necklace in cobalt blue, or choose a rich red scarf to add some life to your favourite coat,” she recommends. “Pair strong colours with your blacks, greys, navys or browns.” Result? A perfectly balanced look with pops of
statement hues.

How to wear it: Mixing opulent and classic items helps prevent royal style from becoming too costume-y. “Pair a fabulous brocade jacket with a cream silk blouse and leather leggings,” suggests Nadler. “A cropped style brocade pant with an
ankle bootie and fur vest is another fabulous way to try the trend.” Where to wear brocades? The casual chic look is perfect for a festive office party or a holiday shopping outing.

How to wear it: Pearls are the number one jewellery trend of the season. “Pearls have a classic and sophisticated vibe so they’re a must-own to
add a pop to your LBD or your white blouse,” says Nadler. “Don’t be afraid to mix silver and gold jewellery. The richness of gold is cooled down a bit by the softness of silver. Together, the two make an unexpected statement.”

Royal fashion trend lesson: Gold crown

How to wear it: “I’m not sure that you can,” Nadler admits. “The average woman won’t be wearing a crown. Perhaps a diamond tiara to a formal function?” In other words, save the crown for bachelorette parties, Halloween costumes or a wedding—unless you attend a black tie event where a delicate gold tiara is appropriate. (But if you want to wear a crown while making cinnamon waffles in your
pyjamas, we won’t tell anyone. Promise.)
