Consider it an apology from fashion designers for inflicting stilettos on your poor feet. The humble hoodie—the most comfortable garment in any woman’s wardrobe—is having a serious moment for fall. Not only was it spotted on the runway at Vetements, Alexander Wang and Fenty, but it’s also been worn by off-duty models like Cara Delevingne, Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner. Even Whoopi Goldberg made headlines when she showed up on The View in a Vetements hoodie, which read “May the Bridges We Burn Light the Way.”

But how do you style a sweatshirt and look haute instead of, well, recovering from a break-up? We consulted with Katie Tobin, a Toronto-based wardrobe stylist for eTalk and MTV Canada, on the do’s and don’ts of wearing a hoodie, so that you can stay super comfortable while still looking polished all season long.

Do: Look for interesting fabrics and fits. “I’m wearing an oversized velour cropped sweater now!” Tobin says. “It’s always great to add texture and unique details.”

Don’t: Pull out your oldest hoodie that you use to lay around the house. “Just because they’re in style this season doesn’t mean that holes and stained sweatshirts are a good look. Your hoodie shouldn’t be too grungy.”

Do: Pair it with something cute. “Wear a cropped sweatshirt tucked into a high waisted skirt,” Tobin advises. “Or wear it with a pair of leather leggings or jeans, and add a heel.” You could also use it as a layering piece, underneath a biker jacket or vest.

Don’t: Wear an oversized hoodie with pants that are too baggy—unless you want to look like you’re in the middle of exam season.
