must-haves remain just as fresh as they did last winter, while others have lost their fashion footing. To help you separate the stalled out styles from the more timeless trends, we put together a simple guide for what should remain in your wardrobe this winter – and what should no longer take up precious closet space.

Trend: Berets

Why: While the beret spent the last several seasons in the style spotlight it’s time to put away this tired topper. The flat, menswear-inspired piece has overstayed its sartorial welcome. This winter opt instead for a timeless toque or an ultra-toasty trapper hat to straddle both fashion and functionality. No matter what hat you don this season, don’t be shy when it comes to bright colours and prints. Accessories in eye-catching hues are an easy way to add interest to your cold weather look.

Trend: Capes

Hot or not: Still hot

Why: If the fall/winter runway shows were any indication, capes, wraps and ponchos aren’t going anywhere this winter. We spied cute cape-poncho hybrids at Alexander Wang, long, blanket-style wraps at Band of Outsiders and sporty but sophisticated cloaks at Derek Lam. These loose, comfortable
outerwear options remain a versatile, on-trend way of staying warm yet again this winter. Whether paired with denim, tailored trousers or a prim pencil skirt, capes make a casually chic and cozy winter layer.

Trend: Shapeless bubble jackets

Hot or not: Not

Why: The oversize outwear that kept you warm last season has slipped quietly out the door and off the runway. Puffy jackets and quilt-like coats have been replaced by much sleeker silhouettes this year. Rather than betting on shapeless, unflattering styles, pick up the aforementioned cape, a 60s-inspired swing coat, military trench or a fitted ski jacket that offers warmth – minus the extra material.

Trend: Fur

Hot or not: Still hot

Why: Last season’s go-to winter warmer has serious staying power, as highlighted by designers who have yet to part with the trend. Case in point: eye-catching dégradé furs at Prabal Gurung, Prada’s parade of oversize fur collars and cropped jackets in
crimson-hued fur at Michael Kors. Since the real deal is out of the question, set your sights on faux. If you would rather not go full board with faux fur pick up a coat with an attachable fur collar or a pair of gloves with fur at the wrists.

Trend: Thigh-high boots

Hot or not: Not

Why: Footwear is fickle, and while thigh-high styles may have stuck around for a few seasons, the time has come to explore a new chapter in cold weather footwear. Some of this season’s favourites include
lace-up boots, ankle boots and chic but sturdy riding boots. If you really want to go for a style that can withstand the cold, choose something sleek but well-lined and water-resistant to keep feet fashionable as well as warm and dry.

Trend: Sleek silhouettes

Why: Designers from Victoria Beckham to Marni remained enthusiastic about making women’s fashion curve-friendly this season. The resurgence of
retro-inspired, nip-waisted and form-fitting pieces remains a go-to trend this winter. As the temperature drops don’t hide behind bulky dresses, slouchy sweaters or shapeless coats. Stick to fitted pencil skirts, sleek shift dresses, high-waisted trousers and curve-hugging cocktail dresses.

Trend: Camel

Hot or not: Not

Why: Wear camel only to anchor your brights this season, not as the main focus of your outfit. While last winter’s favourite neutral remains a classic colour (literally every influential fashion editor was sporting a camel coat in the front row last winter), it is no longer a fashion focal point. A lot of attention this fall and winter is on vibrant colours, plaids, stripes, polka dots and interesting textures and embellishments, pushing neutrals off to the side. Use caramel to accentuate the rest of your wardrobe and offer balance against bolder prints and patterns.
