Fashion tips: 7 ways to dress up your Little White Dress
Fashion tips for how to change the look of the little white dress, this summer fashion essential.
by : Jessica Hainstock- Jul 31st, 2012
The Little White Dress, or LWD, has come into its own this season and is giving its black counterpart a run its money—just look to the runways of Céline, Lanvin or YSL for confirmation. Even Givenchy, the father of the original LBD (think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s), showed his support of lightening up this season with his Spring/Summer 2012 runway show.
Chic, easily accessorized and cool in appearance, the LWD signifies a wardrobe shift from reserved winter to easy-breeze summer. Dressed up or down, for work or the weekend, solo or accessorized, the LWD is a trend to be tried this summer. We’ve called on Sansyrae St.Martin, a Toronto fashion stylist for Plutino Group, to share expert tips on the best ways to accessorize and play with this look to make sure that when you do try it (you will, won’t you?) you’re going to rock it.
Summer is here, you have the perfect Little White Dress, and you’re looking for ways to mix it up a bit. What do you recommend?
"With so many options to choose from this summer—colour blocking, textures, accessories, nail colours—the LWD is easy to transition and nearly impossible to get wrong when self styling," states St. Martin.
St. Martin suggests dressing up your LWD in these seven stylish ways:
LWD FASHION TIP #1: Add a colourful belt.
“Wearing a brightly coloured skinny belt with your LWD, or tying a piece of coloured ribbon around your waist into a little bow adds a fun hint of personality to your LWD while still keeping it simple and stress-free.”
LWD FASHION TIP #2: Play with statement jewellery.
“The LWD is a perfect canvas for statement jewelry. Easily transform your LWD from day to evening by adding a few big sparkly rings and a bright pair of earrings, or a bold collar necklace.”
LWD FASHION TIP #3: Add a pop of colour with a bold lip.
“Because the Little White Dress is so effortless, play up your sexy side with a playful bright lip colour. Try wearing coral, pink, purple, or red lipstick with your LWD.”

LWD FASHION TIP #4: Experiment with statement shoes.
“Run to the market in your LWD and converse sneakers, trade in the sneakers for fancy little flat sandals to meet a girlfriend for a little shopping and just before hopping into a cab for a night on the town, trade the flats in for a coloured pair of super high heels.”
LWD FASHION TIP #5: Embrace the power of the scarf.
“There are so many ways to pair a scarf with your LWD. Wrap it like a belt, drape it around your neck, tie it in your hair, any which way you use it, it’s a great way to add colour to your dress. I also love the look of tone on tone. Wear a light grey, or off-white scarf with your LWD for a sophisticated and elegant look.”
LWD FASHION TIP #6: Be brave with a bold accessory.
“Dying to wear your great new hat or that patterned bag but don’t know what to wear it with? Throw on your LWD and paint your nails to match the accessory of your choice.”
LWD FASHION TIP #7: Add a cardigan or a vest.
“A little denim vest or a printed cardi are both great ways to play down your LWD and give it a sporty little touch.”
