Last summer we were caught up in the high-voltage allure of the Barbiecore aesthetic — but this Spring-Summer 2023 season, fashion’s got a case of the blues.

On Spring-Summer 2023 runways, we witnessed a wave of serene shades ranging from baby blue hues to vivid cerulean. During the Givenchy and Victoria Beckham shows, models sauntered down the catwalk clad in powder blue gowns. Off-White rolled out the blue carpet at its ready-to-wear show where models were dressed in monochromatic cobalt ensembles, and Blumarine embraced the mermaidcore movement with its “underwater” themed show rife with ultramarine blue hues in its designs.

As much as this cool-as-a-cucumber colour is pleasing to the eye, it’s equally as soothing for the psyche. Contrary to negative connotations surrounding “the blues”, a worldwide survey conducted by YouGov in 2015 revealed that blue is, in fact, the world’s favourite colour. Further research from a separate survey carried out in 2019 concluded that is also the most relaxing. Dark blue shades in particular turned out to be most often associated with feelings of calmness — perhaps due to the peaceful imagery that comes to mind when picturing that something blue.

It is true that this serene shade does not naturally occur in nature as often as say green or yellow, but when we do spot it — it exists in high volumes. Cloudless clear skies. The pushing and pulling of waves in the world’s vast ocean. The sky and the sea roll on for as far as the eye can see, inspiring feelings of hope while evoking peace and tranquility that soothes the mind at the same time. To that sentiment we must pose the question, why shouldn’t that same feeling be brought to the clothes we adorn our bodies with? It’s been an intense past couple of years for all of us, and it’s high time we embrace moments of serenity and allow our fashions to mirror that mindset.
