It’s easy to pick out the classic winter fashion pieces that will easily translate into your cold-weather wardrobe. But it starts to get interesting when designers take a staple item like a winter-ready cashmere sweater and make us want to incorporate it back into our everyday looks in new and playful ways.

We chose the five best winter sweater styles from the Fall 2013 runways, and put together outfit inspirations to cozy up to for every occasion.

Perfect for: A playful weekend sweater
How to wear it: A whimsical cartoon, geometric or Bill Cosby-inspired print works wonderfully as a fun, casual look when paired with jeans and flat ankle boots. For a night version of your winter fashion, pair a crisp white blouse underneath and a chunky necklace. Upgrade to any boot with a heel.

How to wear it: While the fitted structure of the cable knit makes the sweater naturally classic, layering is key to taking it into a more playful realm.
