Samantha Isbell is dedicated to the game. As a professional hockey player with the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) for Ottawa, she spends up to 15 hours training in the gym and on the ice each week. She also works with a mental skills coach and, whenever she has a moment, reads books and listens to podcasts about mental toughness. “I have a relentless desire to improve,” she says. “I’m always eager to learn and grow.”

Even when she’s not actively working on her game, movement is a central part of Isbell’s life. She loves to golf and is obsessed with her two dogs, who get plenty of attention and exercise. This means that having clothes that suit her active lifestyle, whether she’s training or walking the pups, is key. But she also wants to be on trend.

“When it comes to sportswear, style is important because I want to feel confident and express my personality, even when I’m working out or playing,” she says. The athlete is known for her game-day looks, which are always edgy and fashion-forward, mixing streetwear with business-casual pieces.

“Fit is also crucial because it affects how I move. Clothing that’s too tight or too loose can be distracting and hinder performance,” says Isbell. And then there’s comfort, which is non-negotiable. “I need fabrics that are breathable, moisture-wicking and soft against the skin to keep me focused on my game.”

This year, Isbell is turning to Under Armour’s Fall 2024 Back to School collection, which mixes athleisure pieces with performance tech pieces. It features everything from cargo pants and slouchy handbags to branded shorts and bras. Her favourite pieces? The Unstoppable Crop Jacket and the Icon Fleece Wide Leg Pants. (Shop them both below.)

Here, Isbell shares her tips for styling the collection and integrating it into your existing wardrobe.

Wear a sporty cropped jacket over a dress or jumpsuit.

While Isbell thinks the Unstoppable Crop Jacket can be worn so many different ways, she’d opt to put it over a tight biker jumpsuit or an athletic dress to “balance the bagginess of the jacket.” She’d add a pair of white socks (“with or without ruffles”), chunky sneakers, jewellery, a shoulder bag and a pair of sunglasses.

Let your waistband peek out.

A look that Isbell loves is baggy trousers with a “waistband peeking out from under the top of the pants.” Get it by wearing the Icon Fleece Wide Leg Pants (or the Unstoppable RTP Para Pants) over the HG Shorty, which is a biker short with a thick Under Armour-branded elasticized waistband. Add a baby tee and a handbag if you’re heading out with friends.

Experiment—and own it.

“Sandwich colours, add baggier pieces and experiment with different fabrics and prints,” says Isbell. “Outfits that don’t make sense at first can end up being the trendiest. Owning it is 90 percent of it.”
