“People tell me I’m a compliment maker,” says jewellery designer Jenny Bird. But her latest collaboration does more than elicit flattery. Bird worked with Far + Wide Collective, an online platform that connects artisans in emerging economies with global shoppers, on an 11-piece jewellery collection created by seven groups of makers at the Turquoise Mountain Institute in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Most of the pieces feature a circular horizon motif inlaid with lapis or black tourmaline. Running her thumb over the circular motif, Bird praises the extraordinary handiwork and explains the meaning of the design: “The circle represents the world, with me standing on the shores of Canada looking over to Afghanistan across the ocean, connected to the artisans there.”
