Most major Black Friday sales have yet to be announced, but IKEA Canada has given customers a huge heads up about their new and improved sustainable promotion for the major shopping day, coming up on November 27. This year won’t see any door crasher promos; instead, the furniture company is asking customers to return their gently used IKEA products in exchange for double the monetary value in store credit.
“On one of the biggest shopping days of the year, we want to change the conversation from one of mass consumption to mass circularity, and show how sustainable living can be easy and affordable for everyone,” Melissa Barbosa, head of sustainability, IKEA Canada, said in a press release. “This Black Friday, we will redefine savings by inspiring and enabling Canadians to save not only money, but also water, energy, waste and resources.”
There will be additional special offers on “As-Is” products as part of the promotion. The company also has a Sell-Back program all year round, which allows customers to give their products back for store credit – products are either resold in the As Is section or donated to charity.
IKEA is aiming to become fully circular and climate positive by 2030, so this campaign is a big step in the right direction. Other sustainability efforts include the phasing out of single use plastics from home furnishings and a “green dot” product guide to sustainable living.
The Black Friday promotion will run from mid-November until the end of the month, with more details to come.
