On the heels of its successful collaboration with Virgil Abloh, IKEA is announcing another fashionable partnership – this time, with Byredo founder Ben Gorham. The OSYNLIG collection, Swedish for “invisible,” features thirteen candles in a variety of floral, woodsy and fresh scents, like lilac and amber, tobacco and honey, and basil and mint.

To develop the scents, IKEA partnered with students from London’s Royal College of Art to help understand how scent can help transform a space. “I don’t think any smell will be more indicative of 2020 than the smell of the home,” Gorham told media in a digital press conference for the collection, noting that there are no rules, only personal preference, when it comes to deciding on fragrance for the home.

Perhaps the best part of the collection is that the candles are actually affordable. Prices range from $7 for the smallest, tea-light-sized candles, $12 for the medium-sized candles and $28 for the large candles, which are a significant size  – think four wicks in a ceramic vessel that can double as a centrepiece – for the price point. (For comparison, a Byredo brand candle is usually priced between $60 and $120.)  “Price is super important to us at IKEA,” said James Futcher, creative leader for the brand.  “We want to make sure we democratize design and make it available for many people. Design shouldn’t have a price tag.”

“I really enjoy the idea of being able to make interesting products accessible to as many people as possible,” added Gorham about his decision to partner with IKEA. “I felt they were one of the few [brands] who could develop and manufacture product of this quality, yet make it available at this price point.”

The OSYNLIG collection will be available in IKEA stores across Canada and online as of November 1st. See every scent in the candle collection below.
