1. Garmentory

Co-founded by Vancouverite Adele Tetangco, Garmentory (garmentory.com) is a one-stop shop for a roster of independent boutiques and labels. You’ll find buzzy designers, functional, frill-free leather carryalls from The Drive New York boutique in Brooklyn and directional, artful jewellery from Vancouver’s One of a Few shop.

2. Of a Kind

The e-comm site Of a Kind (ofakind.com) is like a fashion-only Etsy, carrying limited-edition wares by indie designers. It also collects stories and how-tos from its sellers, so you can get travel tips, cocktail recipes or even advice on buying vintage textiles while you browse.

3. Shoptiques

Online shopping platform Shoptiques (shoptiques.com) – which was developed at the same tech incubator as Airbnb and Dropbox – culls merch from indie bricks-and-mortar shops (like Wenhua Duvergé in Paris and Kalloné Intimi on Queen Street West in Toronto) in the world’s coolest neighbourhoods.

Staples that are just a notch above being basic.
