NYFW Spring 2014: Chatting backstage with Alexander Wang, plus my photo diary
Here’s Kanye West sitting front row, glaring at the cameras. Terry Richardson is beside him. The Alexander Wang show is one of the biggest and most anticipated of all of New York Fashion Week. Last night, at Pier 94, everyone from Kanye West to Courtney Love showed up to see what the designer has in store for Spring 2014. Here’s my photo diary (shot with a Samsung Kies camera—goodbye, blurry images!) The show was spectacular, with lots of ’90s references (think: logo mania, slip dresses, Mary Jane shoes, as well as nods to classic hip hop). Plus, as usual, Wang lured the stars of the modelling world to the runway—I spotted Georgia May Jagger, Erin Wasson and Joan Smalls.

Models wandered through the industrial set.
Post-show, I wandered backstage and found myself face-to-face with Wang himself, cheerfully conducting interviews with the press. "It was a play on the logo," Wang explained about his collection. "It was supposed to be very sexy, very witty, and very playful."
After the show, I bumped right into Suzy Menkes speaking with Wang.
"You look skinny!" One editor declared.
"I do?" Wang said.
"Too much work?" "No, no, no, no," he protested, laughing. Later, when asked about the difficulties of running Balenciaga alongside his own namesake label, Wang says "It’s a great mental exercise."
Finally, outside the show, I found Joan Smalls posing for photogs in the middle of the street. Yes, the model is so beautiful she literally stopped traffic.
