NYFW Fall 2013: At Rebecca Minkoff, nearly at Jason Wu, and comfort food at ABC Kitchen

Five things I noticed, overheard, experienced—or, sadly, missed—on Day 1 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. 1. Full fashion marks to the
fearless fashionistas who were undaunted by the blizzard yesterday in New York. Fab furs, leather shorts and completely non-sensible footwear were style staples. 2. Rebecca Minkoff opened her show with an emerald-green thin-striped skirt confirming Pantone’s recent declaration that this is the It colour for 2013.

3. In the “sadly missed” category: A mail mix-up led to my Jason Wu invite not arriving in time. By all accounts, it was a stylish, edgy and polished collection and ushered in the season’s first fashion buzzwords: extreme femininity.

4. Speaking of extremes… I broke down mid-way through the day and bought shiny rubber boots. The slush, snow and salt were shredding my other boots. *Again, my kudos to the braver fashion pack mentioned in point 1.
5. I devoured the best mashed potatoes of my life at the
ABC Kitchen. Whipped, creamy and divine. The Jean-Georges-helmed joint is famous for its organic, locally sourced food. The decor—an eclectic mix of modern pieces, recycled farmhouse touches and oversized vintage armoires—was a witty counterpoint to this seriously delicious food.
BONUS Overheard in the lineup for the Minkoff show: “I’m a really sexual person; I don’t think I could date someone over 40.”* *Spoken in cringe-inducing “upspeak.”
