Milan Fashion Week Fall 2013: My day in food (and fashion!) at Brunello Cucinelli, Gucci and Alberta Ferretti—with a cameo by Garance Doré
My first appointment of the day was the Brunello Cucinelli presentation, in an absolutely beautiful showroom on Viale Montello. As models milled around in charcoal cashmere, quilted leathers and slouchy trousers, editors chatted softly and sipped champagne (I stuck to espresso, because it was a little early to be breaking out the Veuve). But I couldn’t resist some of the incredible appetizers on display—cheese and croissants? Count me in! (And yes—that is a prosciutto carving station. Only in Milan, friends). The gorgeous Brunello Cucinelli showroom.

Post-Cucinelli, I wandered over to the Gucci show, where a team of incredibly good-looking male models scanned the barcode on our invites before inviting us to have a glass of bubbly and a blueberry tart, which I inhaled way too quickly to snap a photo of.
You can’t tell from this picture, but the dudes at the door at Gucci were totally babely.
As I waited for the fashionable masses to file in, I caught up with Garance Doré, who told me she wasn’t sure which show she was most excited for. “I love Milan so much,” she purred, “I can never decide which designer I love the most!” But later—quel horreur! I spotted her seated in the second row. She was sitting right behind Salma Hayek, whose bodyguards had to literally restrain aggressive paparazzi from taking her picture.
Salma scurried into the van while her bodyguard, the bald fellow, physically held paparazzi back.
Speaking of photographers, I was amazed to see that most of the fashion crowd were demurely dressed in all-black everything—total crow fashion. Has Suzy Menkes reignited a trend? Or is it simple nostalgia for the good-old-days, before peacocks ruled the roost? It will be interesting to see if this trend continues on through out the week.
Following the Gucci show, I headed over to the media lounge, where I was delighted to find this sweets table. (Have I mentioned yet that I absolutely love Milan?) I explored a little further, and found a booth where editors can have their makeup touched up between shows.
I rounded out the day at Alberta Ferretti, who had—yes, more champagne—as well as giant bowls of strawberries. As I waited for the show to start, behind an air-kissing Anna Wintour and Franca Sozzani, I had a pinch me moment. If I had only worn flats instead of Michael Kors stilettos, it would have been the world’s most perfect day.
