Milan Fashion Week Fall 2013: Getting to MaxMara, or, the four mistakes that made my morning a challenge
Here’s the thing with Milan: You can’t hail a cab. You have to wait in line at a stand for a cabbie to take mercy on you. So, when I emerged from my hotel at 7:30 this morning to find it was raining and snowing simultaneously, I realized getting across the city was going to be tricky.
Mistake no. 1: Buying an umbrella from a shady man on a street corner. It seemed like a no-brainer. Buy a cheap umbrella from a man on the street and salvage my
just-blown-out ‘do. But as I waited in a long line at the cab stand, a huge gust of wind completely destroyed my purchase. First the handle fell off, then the rest of it came apart. It literally disintegrated in my hands.
Mistake no. 2: Waiting outside for a cab for 20 minutes. So, it’s 7:50. I’m drenched. My hair is matted with water, and the ends are stringy. There are no cabs to be found and I’m at the end of a very long line. I decide to take my chances and try to navigate the subway.

Mistake no. 3: Not learning basic Italian. Do you know how challenging it is to get directions when there is a language barrier? Communication suddenly requires elaborate miming. Somehow, I managed to find the right subway stop and ended up in the middle of a residential neighbourhood. I was standing there, lost and helpless, when someone decided to take mercy on me—a man named Phillipe told me that he would just walk me there himself. I was too tired and stressed out to worry about stranger danger, and luckily Philippe led me right to the MaxMara venue. “Grazie, grazie, grazie!” I repeated, so relieved to have made it that it was all I could do not to throw my arms around his neck.
Mistake no. 4: Lacking credentials It turns out you can’t just walk backstage—or this man will get very upset with you.
“But I’m press!” I protested weakly, as he slammed the door in my face. Luckily, I had the PR contact’s phone number, and she came to grab me four minutes later. “You look like you’ve had a rough morning,” she told me with a kind smile. “You have no idea,” I responded. It was only 8:30.
