Milan Fashion Week Fall 2013: Brunello Cuccinelli on his fall collection
ELLE Canada caught up with Brunello Cuccinelli during Milan Fashion Week to talk fall inspirations, the Cuccinelli woman, and his favourite pieces from the Fall collection. Brunello Cuccinelli is carried by Holt Renfrew in Canada.
What is the inspiration behind this collection? This season I was very inspired by this idea of androgyny, combining masculine details and shapes with feminine fabrics and silhouettes, or vice versa. The collection has a lot of three-dimensional effects, to create the effect of volume and sculpture. I am very much interested in the idea of making garments with fluid, light lines and shapes that are incredibly wearable, but that are made with a skilled hand, using the techniques of haute couture.
Who do you see wearing these pieces?
Our collection is for the modern woman with a chic sensibility, the woman who has busy days of luncheons, picking up the children from school, running around the city, taking care of her family, and then meeting up with her husband and his colleagues for a drink and a dinner in the evening. She is well-traveled, sophisticated, and always dressed right for each occasion.
What is your favorite piece or look from the collection and why? If I had to pick just one piece, I would say that the tuxedo jackets padded with an inner layer of neoprene and layered with wool flannel would be a favorite piece. I has a light, soft, voluminous, geometric effect that is very flattering.
What is your design process like? I like to create clothes that are inspired by the world around me. I typically take long walks around the verdant landscapes of Solomeo gathering inspiration from the colors and natural fibers that I see there. The fields of golden wheat, the green olive trees, and the neutral tones in the stones and the clay by the river all inspire my designs. I think these natural elements complement the natural beauty of women and their true radiance shines through.
