London Fashion Week Fall 2013: Designer Christopher Raeburn’s message in a bottle
It’s the tiniest fashion show invitation I’ve ever received. For his seventh namesake collection, British designer Christopher Raeburn (who also moonlights as the creative director of Victorinox), sent out thumb-sized bottles (complete with a cork cap). Inside each one was a little rolled piece of fabric with the show details—a true fashion-forward message in a bottle. How cute!
I caught up with Christopher after his runway show.
On the invitation “The message in the bottle links to our naval theme for the season. We do unique invites every season—we’ve done everything from a toy parachute to fabric and texture-based invitations.”

On the inspiration for the collection “We looked to some really incredible sea forts out on the English Channel. They were built about seven miles off the coast in WWII to defend London and there are 7 or 8 of them that were originally connected by walkways. They are beautiful rusted structures now with real character so it was interesting to look at the textures, and see how that could be applied to the collection.

"We focus a lot on outerwear with layering and protection, so it was a natural inspiration to look to Naval influences, and, of course, the duffle coat. I’m always interested in the crossover between masculinity of at lot of our research subjects [like the Maunsell Sea Forts] but then ending up with a very feminine aesthetic. So it’s that mix of functionality and femininity that I try and bring into the collection.”
On the accessories
“We work at lot with backpacks—they are our best-seller for women’s wear, but each season we also develop a different animal using all the off-cuts from the studio. And this season, because of the theme, the animal we’ve done is the water rat.”
