Erdem greets the crowd at his s/s 2015 show. (Image courtesy of Imaxtree.) Earlier today, London-based, Montreal-bred designer
Erdem Moralioğlu presented his spring/summer 2015 collection in London. The Old
Selfridges Hotel was transformed into a lush jungle with leafy plants and hanging vines and models wafted through the mysterious space in black and green foliage prints and feathers. After the finale walk, I went backstage where the designer showed me his mood board for the collection and talked to me about his inspiration. Read on for my Q&A with the designer, plus my favourite looks from the Erdem Spring 2015 show…

C.H.: What was the inspiration behind the collection? E.M.: I was looking at botony and horticulture, the obsessive study of plants and flowers. But then also the idea of these things becoming undone and lost in the jungle. I really like the idea of a mix between trussed up and loose. The mood board for Erdem Spring 2015. C.H.: That duality seems to play out in the collection most obviously in some of the gowns that have a very refined silhouette, but feature sheer panels and cut-outs. E.M.: I’ve always been fascinated by contradiction. I love mixing elements, like the high necklines with a short hem or sheer sections. I like the idea that when you add something, you have to take away something else. Erdem Spring 2015. (Image courtesy of Imaxtree.)
C.H.: The feathers used in some of the pieces are very striking. What inspired you to incorporate them into this collection? E.M.: The feathers were a nod to that same theme of being lost in the jungle. I imagined a woman becoming a bird of paradise. Erdem Spring 2015. (Image courtesy of Imaxtree.)
C.H.: The idea of being lost in a jungle seems sort of dark, but beautiful. Would you say that’s the mood of the collection? E.M.: There’s definitely a darkness to the collection, but not just in this collection. I always love when something is very beautiful but has a mysterious underbelly. It makes it so much more compelling. Erdem Spring 2015. (Image courtesy of Imaxtree.)
