#LFW Spring 2015: Day 1’s faux fur, bespoke knits and metallic leather
Arriving at my hotel late this morning, I was eager to join in the excitement of the first day of
London Fashion Week. After checking in and tearing open a pile of invitations with the same verve I displayed at my childhood birthday parties, I jumped on the tube and joined the crowds at some of the mostly hotly anticipated presentations of the season. And it was even better than I expected. Here are a few impressions from an incredible first day.
1. Everyone is talking about Shrimps. And for good reason. Designer
Hannah Weiland, who launched her line of brightly coloured faux fur jackets and accessories only a year ago, presented today a beautiful spring/summer collection that quickly became the most buzzed about among the fashion set at
Somerset House (not to mention on Instagram). Introducing faux pony hair and stingray textiles, as well as silk pyjama-style separates (in collab with
Poplin) and shoes (with
Sophia Webster), Weiland told me after her presentation that she is closer to defining the
Shrimps woman: someone who “has fun with her style.” This clutch, though—right?
2. London’s got talent. Weiland is just one of the many hot young talents presenting in London this season. (We’re especially excited for Montreal-born
Thomas Tait’s catwalk show on Monday!) Inside the Emerging Talents showroom at Somerset House, we discovered
Wool and The Gang, creators of handmade, sustainable, bespoke knitwear that is exactly what we need to get us through the next polar vortex. I’ll take one in every colour, please.
3. We will all be craving metallic leather for spring. Fashion week can be pretty dangerous. I’m not talking about being trampled by crowds or caught in the crossfire of a street style photo frenzy (though, those are very real concerns)—I’m referring covetitis, and I’ve got a serious case. Every single item from today’s
McQ spring/summer 2015 presentation is now on my wish list, but especially the rose gold and liquid-silver leather pieces. If you haven’t been vaccinated, don’t scroll down, because this moto jacket will get you too.
4. Green juice is the universal lifeblood of the fashion industry. Seriously—it’s everywhere! From a fridge full of branded
Crude Juice at McQ to free flowing libations from
The Good Life Eatery at the
Club Monaco flagship launch, I had about three times the daily recommended intake of Vitamin A within a five-hour period. Which means… I’m ready to do it all again tomorrow!
